Tooth discolouration is one of the most common aesthetic concerns raised in general dental consultations, and there are two broad categories worth understanding before considering treatment. Extrinsic staining sits on the outer surface of the enamel and is often linked to coffee, tea, red wine, or to***co use, while intrinsic staining originates within the tooth structure itself and can be more resistant to whitening.
Professional whitening products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide at concentrations higher than over-the-counter alternatives, which is why the process is supervised by a registered dentist. ZOOM in-chair whitening is completed in a single appointment of around 60 to 90 minutes, involving a clinical assessment, a baseline shade recording, soft tissue protection, and staged application of the whitening gel.
Take-home kits use custom-fitted trays worn over one to three weeks and are also used to maintain results from earlier in-chair treatment. How long results last depends on diet, oral hygiene, to***co use, and the original nature of the staining, and there is no way to predict in advance exactly how much a tooth's shade will change.
Professional whitening is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for patients under 18, or for those with untreated decay or active gum disease. At Odin House Dental in Innaloo, a clinical assessment is completed before any whitening treatment is recommended.
