Optical implant impressions: are we there yet?

Is digital ready to replace conventional impressions in complex implant prosthodontics? Join the ITI Melbourne West Study Club for an evidence-based, practical look at intra-oral scanning for implants with Specialist Prosthodontist Dr Gidon Fixler.

What you’ll learn
This lecture explores the capabilities and limitations of intra-oral scanners for implant restorations, with a focus on multi-unit and full-arch cases. We’ll cover current advancements, accuracy and reliability challenges, and whether digital workflows can fully replace conventional impressions in complex implant prosthodontics.

Speaker
Dr Gidon Fixler completed his Masters of Dentistry at La Trobe University in 2017, graduating dux of his class. He practises in specialist prosthodontic clinics in Melbourne and Geelong, with a particular interest in digital fixed and removable workflows. Gidon is a demonstrator in fixed prosthodontics at the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University, serves as Secretary of the Australian Prosthodontic Society (Vic), and is a co-director for the ITI Study Club (Malvern) and the Inner-City ADA Study Club.

Abutment selection and design in single and multi-unit cases by Dr Hossam Haddad
In the early days of implantology, the implant-abutment joint was still viewed as a purely mechanical seam between an implant and the dental prosthesis. Today, a more advanced understanding of the biological and mechanical processes in the crestal hard and soft tissue has pushed this topic to the forefront of clinical research. Thanks to the huge range of options offered nowadays by new fabrication technologies such as CAD/CAM, we have a variety of choices in regard to abutment materials. During this lecture, Dr Hossam will discuss various criteria that influence the choice of one abutment over the other, as well as the design principles for different clinical scenarios.
