We get lots of questions about these U-Shaped toothbrushes and if we recommend them. Routinely my answer has been no for various reasons - see below - but I had never actually tested it out until tonight!
Watch this reel and see the difference in effectiveness in our little experiment! 🪥 🦷 ✨

We are broadly wanting to achieve two main things when we brush our teeth -
1. Mechanically remove plaque and physically clean the teeth
2. Apply an effective remineralising agent - usually a fluoridated toothpaste

You can see from the video that the original manual toothbrush is much more effective at removing plaque.

Of course we have patients/children where acceptance of a toothbrush is really challenging and parents have reported that the U-Shaped toothbrush is often better accepted in some cases. My caution here is that it is a big compromise in effectiveness and sometimes can mean that we are not able to move away from the U-Shaped one - so we encourage establishment of a manual or electric toothbrush routine in all cases possible and where this may not be possible try to utilise the U-shaped brush as a stepping stone rather than substitute. It’s been a busy few days out of the clinic for Dr Gabrielle. The congress has been so much fun and also so informative. It was themed propel, connect, smile and it delivered on all fronts. Thanks again for having us and can’t wait to see everyone again at the next biannual in Adelaide !
