Everything you eat and drink can have a major effect on the health of your teeth and gums, particularly whether you develop tooth decay, a diet related disease which is caused when the sugars in the food and drinks you eat are taken up by bacteria; these in turn produce the acids that can attack the outer layer of tooth enamel.

To ensure that your diet doesn't negatively affect your teeth, there's a few key things to keep in mind:

Drink lots of water
It’s calorie free, there are no ingredient labels to stress over, and it’s almost free! Even better, tap water in most areas of Australia contains fluoride, one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help prevent tooth decay. If you choose water over anything else, and regularly sip it throughout the day, you're going a long way to making real difference to the health of your teeth and your whole body.

Limit snacking between meals
A key factor in helping to prevent tooth decay is saliva, which provides a natural defence mechanism within the mouth by neutralising the acids produced by bacteria. However, if you snack frequently between meals, your saliva may not get a chance to work, meaning your teeth don't get a break from the acid attacks that occur every time you consume sugary foods or drinks. Try to limit sugary treats to mealtimes, rather than between meals.

Flossing

Here’s something you may not know - nearly half the surface area of your teeth lies between them.
By removing the plaque from between your teeth, you’re helping to prevent gum disease, tooth decay and halitosis, otherwise known as “bad breath”.
So flossing, or interdental cleaning as it’s officially known, is an essential part of caring for your teeth and gums, and not some kind of “nice to have” added extra.
It’s all in the technique
Your dentist is the most qualified person to instruct you on flossing correctly but there are some basic tips you can follow:
Tip 1: Wind about 45cm of floss around your middle fingers and rest it across your thumbs and index fingers.
Tip 2: Use a gentle up-and-down motion that goes down one side of the tooth, just under the little collar of gum and then back up the other side (think of it as an on-the-side “c”).
Tip 3: If you're not sure about the right technique, have a chat to your dentist who can show you all the right flossing moves.

Children need energy at school to learn!
The food you put in your child’s lunch box plays a part in their health.
It is important to have tooth friendly lunches as the foundations of dental care are built at a young age.
Cheese is a great tooth friendly food that is advised by the Australian Dental Association. Foods with high protein such as vegetables and meats are strongly encouraged as well. A tin of tuna or a tuna sand which is a great high protein option for school lunches. Hard boiled eggs are rich in protein and are a health option when it comes to lunches.
Encourage children to eat raw vegetables such as carrots or celery sticks combined with their favourite dips.
One fruit in the lunch box followed with a bottle of fresh water is ideal. Fruits are filled with sugar and acid it is essential to rinse the excess sugar off teeth. Dried fruits have a sticky consistency and have large percentage of concentrated sugar. Canned fruit in natural juice with no added sugar is a great alternative.
The best drink for kids is fresh cold water, its thirst quenching and free of any sugar. Fruit juices, poppa’s, soft drink, ice tea and flavoured milk should be avoided when it comes to drinks for children’s lunches.

Safe for Everyone!
Regardless of whether you’re a child or an adult, you can have X-rays safely taken of the inside and outside of your mouth. The amount of radiation involved is extremely low, and is equivalent to the sort of exposure you’d receive on a 1-2 hour flight. This means that even if you’re pregnant you can have X-rays taken, although they are generally kept to a minimum during this period.
Why X-rays are needed?
The types of X-rays your dentist will take will depend on the conditions for which you are being assessed. The decision to take an X-ray, and the type of X-ray taken, will be influenced by such things as your past and present oral health, an examination of your mouth, your age, risk of disease and any early symptoms of oral disease.
What can dental X-rays detect?
• small areas of decay between teeth not visible in the mouth
• problems with existing fillings, root canals, crowns or bridges
• the presence and severity of gum disease
• abscesses or other sorts of infections
• tooth development issues such as malformed teeth, extra or missing teeth etc.
• cysts and some types of tumours
• traumatic injuries such as tooth and bone fractures
• proximity of teeth to nerves and sinuses
• the development of wisdom teeth and if there is a need for them to be removed.

Teething

Your child’s baby teeth will start to appear, often with the central bottom teeth first, anywhere between 4 months and 10 months. Like every developmental milestone, the point at which your baby gets their teeth is an individual thing and you shouldn’t worry if their teeth appear earlier or later than other kids their age. If you have any concerns in this regard, your dentist will be able to answer any questions you might have.

When your child is teething it can be tough to make them comfortable. But a combination of loving attention, chilled but not frozen teething rings or washcloths, and dummies (don’t use honey or jam on them as this causes decay) often does the trick.
