🦷 It’s about more than just straight teeth! 👄
At Geelong Family Dental Care, we believe great dentistry is about looking at the whole mouth, face and how everything works together — not just the teeth.
Recently, Dr Beng has been furthering his knowledge in oral and orofacial myology and myofunctional issues, exploring the important relationship between the tongue, facial muscles, breathing, swallowing, jaw development and orthodontics.
Why does this matter? Because the position and function of the tongue and surrounding muscles can play an important role in facial growth, dental development, orthodontic stability, facial tone and overall oral function in the world of myofunctional therapy.
Our approach is to look beyond simply asking, “Are the teeth straight?” We also consider:
👅 Tongue position and muscle function
😊 Facial muscle tone and balance
🦷 Tooth position and orthodontic development
😮💨 Breathing and oral habits
🗣️ Swallowing and oral function
🦴 Jaw growth and facial form
By understanding how these different parts work together, we can provide more comprehensive care and help our patients achieve not only a healthy smile, but better overall oral function and facial harmony.
Our dentists' continued learning in this area is part of our commitment to looking at the bigger picture and providing care that goes beyond the teeth.
