This wasn't a particularly challenging retreatment case but we got a real kick out of the patient's satisfaction with the bleaching result.
Treatment was completed over 2 sessions with SWEEPS laser-activated irrigation, a RelyX short fibre reinforced composite base to hopefully reinforce some of that lost pericervical tooth structure from the prior endodontic treatment, and a sodium perborate 'walking bleach' technique.

David is an AHPRA-registered Oral Medicine Specialist whose career sits at the intersection of clinical dentistry, oncology, and academic research. He completed his Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland in 2012, a PhD in 2018, and a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Oral Medicine from the University of Sydney in 2024 — with his doctoral research investigating the emergent oral manifestations of novel cancer immunotherapies and their management.

He holds Staff Specialist appointments in Oral Medicine at Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals, where he is a member of both the Haematology Transplant and Cellular Therapies team and the Head and Neck Service at the Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre. He is also a Clinical Fellow at Westmead Hospital and works privately with the Sydney Specialist Dental Group.

At Dental Aid '26, David will take clinicians through the full continuum of dental care for head and neck cancer patients — from screening and recognition of potentially malignant and malignant oral disease, through pre-treatment dental optimisation, to managing the complex oral complications of surgery, chemoradiation, and increasingly, immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies. A timely and clinically vital session for any practitioner whose patients face a cancer diagnosis.

Dr Ashwin Nair, Specialist Orthodontist

Ashwin is a specialist orthodontist with a clinical practice spanning Sydney and Tamworth. He completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at UNSW before graduating with Honours in Dentistry from the University of Sydney in 2010. After several years in general practice, he returned to the University of Sydney to complete a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics in 2020 — bringing both a GDP's perspective and specialist depth to his work.

Ashwin currently serves as Secretary of the NSW Branch of the Australian Society of Orthodontists and is a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Orthodontics).

Adj Prof Chankhrit Sathorn, Specialist Endodontist
Melbourne and Sydney

Chankhrit is an Adjunct Professor of Endodontics at La Trobe University. Formerly, he was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Endodontic Research at La Trobe University and Convenor of the Predoctoral Endodontics and Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry Programmes at The University of Melbourne. He completed Endodontic specialist training and a PhD at The University of Melbourne and became a member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Stream of Endodontics. His basic dental training was from Thailand.

His area of research focuses on evidence-based Endodontics, systematic reviews, effectiveness and efficiency of various interventions. Based on the cumulative publication of his research studies, Chankhrit has been awarded The Ernest Joske Research Award for work that constitutes an important contribution to dental science research.

He has been invited to speak at several national and international Endodontic congresses such as ASE, ADA, IFEA, and ESE. He is a regular facilitator in Endodontic postgraduate seminars at The University of Sydney, an editorial board member of the Journal of Endodontics, International Endodontic Journal, Dental Traumatology, New Zealand Dental Journal, Journal of Dentistry, and European Journal of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to Endodontics in Melbourne and Sydney.

This patient was referred with a painful infected lower molar (47). One of the challenges was managing the subgingival mesial margin which had clearly contributed to the disease.

Endodontic treatment was completed with SWEEPS Laser-Activated Irrigation, EverX fibre-reinforced base and a Bioclear core. The Bioclear matrix system made managing that subgingival margin a lot more predictable!

The patient will see their general dentist for the definitive restoration and to replace the distal restoration on the adjacent 46.

This patient was referred with an infected lower molar which had a deep distal restoration allowing bacterial ingress. Endodontic treatment was completed in one visit with SWEEPS laser-activated irrigation and a focus on correcting the coronal seal. Managing these deep distal margins isn't easy but we were pleased with the result.
