Gum disease occurs when tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth (your gums) becomes infected. 🩸🦷

The infection of the gum is caused by plaque, which is bacteria that forms on teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease:
💢 Gingivitis — a mild form which occurs when gums become red and swollen. Gums may bleed easily when they're brushed and cause bad breath.
💢 Periodontitis — a severe form which occurs when gums become weak, creating gaps for germs to get trapped. This leads to increased swelling and over time your teeth may become loose or fall out.

You've probably already guessed it, but the best way to prevent gum disease is to brush your teeth and gums twice a day, and floss once a day. It's important to do this, even if your gums are bleeding. 🪥

If you think you may have gum disease, it's best to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Gingivitis can be cured without permanent damage, but periodontitis can't be cured, only controlled.

If you're brushing for less than 2 minutes you're doing it wrong 👏

😄 Brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and just before bed.

Gently move the toothbrush in small circular motions, forward and backward, jiggling or vibrating the brush over each tooth to remove plaque from above and below the gum line.
