๐Ÿ“Œ Dental Implants vs Bridges: What Is the Difference?

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth without relying on the neighbouring teeth for support. A traditional bridge fills the gap by using teeth beside it as anchors.
Both options can restore appearance and chewing, but they involve different procedures, maintenance needs and clinical considerations. The condition of the adjacent teeth, gums, jawbone and bite will influence which pathway may be suitable. There is no single option that is right for every patient.
Dr Ash is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist in Mermaid Waters, welcoming patients from across the Gold Coast. Any treatment recommendation and suitability can only be confirmed after an individual assessment.

โค PORCELAIN VENEERS OR CROWNS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

If your teeth are chipped, worn, discoloured or heavily restored, you may be unsure whether veneers or crowns are more appropriate.
A porcelain veneer covers mainly the visible front surface of a tooth and may be considered when improving the shape, colour or proportions of an otherwise suitable tooth.
A crown surrounds most of the tooth above the gumline and may provide greater protection when a tooth is significantly damaged, weakened or heavily filled.
The right choice depends on more than appearance.
Your remaining tooth structure, bite, gum health and long-term functional needs must also be assessed. In some cases, neither option may be recommended.

๐Ÿ“ŒCONCERNED ABOUT AN OLD CROWN, BRIDGE OR PREVIOUS DENTAL WORK?

A crown or bridge that feels loose, painful or uncomfortable may need professional assessment. Warning signs can include sensitivity, difficulty chewing, visible cracks, changes around the gumline or a bite that no longer feels balanced.
The first step is to determine what is happening underneath and around the restoration. Some dental work may be repaired or retained, while other restorations may need to be replaced.
When several teeth or restorations are involved, a broader rehabilitation plan may be needed to address the bite and supporting teeth together.

๐Ÿ“Œ ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?

Dental implants can replace one tooth, several teeth or support a full-arch restorationโ€”but they are not automatically suitable for every patient.
Your gum health, available jawbone, bite, medical history, smoking status and existing dental work all need to be considered.
Three-dimensional imaging may also be required to assess the bone and nearby anatomical structures before treatment is planned.
If an implant is not the most appropriate pathway, alternatives such as a bridge, removable denture or another restorative option may be discussed.
A proper assessment helps you understand the benefits, limitations, likely stages and costs before making a decision.

ARE YOUR TEETH BECOMING SHORTER, FLATTER OR MORE SENSITIVE?

Tooth wear often develops gradually. Grinding, clenching, acid erosion and bite problems can slowly change the shape of your teeth and affect comfort, appearance and chewing.

When several teeth are worn, damaged or failing, treating one tooth at a time may not address the wider problem.

Full-mouth rehabilitation involves assessing the teeth, gums, jaw joints, bite and existing dental work together before developing a carefully sequenced treatment plan.

Depending on your needs, treatment may involve crowns, veneers, bridges, dental implants or a combination of options. Not every patient requires treatment across the entire mouth, and suitability must be established through assessment.

ARE LOOSE DENTURES MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO EAT COMFORTABLY?

Dentures that move while eating or speaking can cause frustration, sore areas and reduced confidence in social situations.

For suitable patients, implant-retained dentures may provide greater stability. A small number of dental implants can be used to help secure the denture, reducing unwanted movement while allowing it to be removed for cleaning. This differs from a fixed full-arch bridge, such as All-on-4.

The appropriate number of implants and type of restoration depend on your jawbone, gums, bite, existing denture and overall oral health.

Dr Ash is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist in Mermaid Waters with advanced training in dentures, dental implants and full-mouth rehabilitation. He welcomes patients from across the Gold Coast.

JAW PAIN, CLICKING OR LOCKING SHOULDNโ€™T BE IGNORED

Does your jaw click when you eat, feel stiff in the morning or occasionally become difficult to open?
These symptoms may be associated with temporomandibular disorders, commonly known as TMD. Other possible signs include facial discomfort, headaches, teeth grinding, limited jaw movement and changes in the way your teeth meet.
Because jaw discomfort can have several causes, treatment should begin with a careful assessmentโ€”not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Depending on the findings, management may involve a custom splint, bite assessment, habit changes, physiotherapy or restorative treatment.
Dr Ash is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist with advanced training in jaw function, bite relationships and complex restorative care. His practice is located in Mermaid Waters and welcomes patients from across the Gold Coast.

ALL-ON-4 OR REMOVABLE DENTURES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Are missing or failing teeth making it difficult to eat, speak or smile comfortably?

Traditional dentures are removable and rest on the gums. All-on-4 is a full-arch treatment concept in which a fixed bridge is supported by carefully positioned dental implants.

Unlike a removable denture, the bridge remains secured in place and is not removed each night. However, All-on-4 is not automatically the right option for everyone.

Your jawbone, gums, bite, general health and existing teeth must be carefully assessed before treatment is recommended.

Dr Ash is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist in Mermaid Waters, serving patients from across the Gold Coast. He provides personalised planning for dentures, implant-supported options and complex full-arch rehabilitation.

DENTAL IMPLANTS OR A BRIDGE: WHICH OPTION MAY SUIT YOU?

If you are missing a tooth, you may be wondering whether a dental implant or a dental bridge is the better option.
A dental implant replaces the missing tooth without relying on the neighbouring teeth for support. A traditional bridge fills the space by using the teeth beside the gap as anchors.
Both can restore appearance and chewing function, but the most suitable option depends on the health of your remaining teeth, gums, jawbone and bite.
Dr Ash is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist with advanced training in replacing missing teeth and planning complex restorative treatment.
At his Mermaid Waters practice, he helps patients from across the Gold Coast understand the benefits, limitations and long-term considerations of each option.
Suitability can only be confirmed after a comprehensive assessment.
