As dentists, we have always assumed that every person who walks into the practice has every disease known to man - well, not really... but you know what we mean!
We even have a term for it; Universal Precautions. Dentists have always practiced Universal Precautions, but with COVID19; we've needed to step things up a notch to keep you and your family, ourselves, and our community as safe as possible. That's why when you come to see us now for hygiene or dental work, we may look a little scary, with additional coverings from head-to-toe. Our normally buzzing lounge is empty; as we have scattered and limited the number of people we have in our building at any one time. There may be a few other changes that you also notice. However, we can assure you that you will still receive a warm smiling face on arrival, and receive the same highest-level dental care that we can provide. It's our commitment to keeping everyone safe.

So just so you know, this is what we look like... scary, right?

Latest Geelong Smile Studio COVID-19 Update:

These are challenging, unprecedented times and we have needed to make some changes to the way we work in order to protect the safety of your family, our team members, and the safety of our community from COVID-19.

Your experience at Geelong Smile Studio will be a little different from previously. You will most certainly still be receiving the highest standard of dental care, but with a difference.

- In order to observe social distancing and minimise the number of people in the building, we have arranged staggered appointment times. We ask you please to arrive on time. If you arrive early, we may need to ask you to wait in your car in our car park. Our patient lounge is not being used during this time.

- To minimise the number of people in the building and the risk factors, we also ask that only parents of young children accompany patients to their appointment.

- Upon arrival, you will receive a smile. Please utilise the hand sanitizer supplied. We will take your temperature and you will be asked to perform a preprocedural mouth rinse. You will then be taken to your treatment room where your dentist/hygienist will meet you.

- We may ask you to hand over your dental health insurance card at this time for faster processing and to minimise the areas affected by patient flow through the building.

- We understand that a visit to the dentist can cause some nervous energy, requiring an urgent trip to the bathroom. Since the chief medical officer recommended the closure of public toilets, we would like to consider our toilets as public toilets, so not in use. However, if this makes your appointment difficult, please let us know.

- Most importantly, if you develop cold and flu symptoms or have been in contact with a covid-19 suspected or positive case, please inform us urgently so we can reschedule your appointment.

These changes are necessary for us to be able to provide dental care in a safe manner.

We hope soon we can get back to how we used to work, providing up to date magazines to read, having great chats, and catching up on your news, welcoming whole families in for a fun visit to the dentist. But for now, a dental experience is, unfortunately, a little different from normal.

Geelong Smile Studio COVID-19 Update:

It has certainly been a tough few weeks for all Australians, but we are proud to say we have all played our role to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Consequently, the Government has chosen to relax dental restrictions from Level 3 to Level 2 from Monday April 27. This permits dentists to be able to do more routine procedures; which do not produce aerosols (droplets of saliva and blood).

Procedures we are now permitted to perform:
- Examinations
- Restorations (under rubber dam)
- Non-surgical extractions
- Medical management of soft tissue presentations (such as ulcers)
- Temporomandibular joint dysfunction management
- Denture procedures
- Preventive procedures such as the application of topical remineralising agents

Please note that this list does not include:
- Routine hygiene appointments – since ultrasonic cleaners produce an abundance of aerosols.
- Dental implant placement

It remains our absolute priority to ensure that any treatments provided are performed in a manner that minimises the risk of exposure of COVID-19 to our patients, our people, and to our community. You will notice that dentistry at Geelong Smile Studio will look different from what it was in the past. You will still get our warm friendly greetings, but our smiles and clothing will be covered with full-length surgical gowns and hairnets, in addition to our usual high end personal protective equipment.

Our appointment schedule will also be modified to permit only one patient to ever be in the patient lounge at a time. Effectively; it will be one person in, one person out, with adequate time in-between to comprehensively clean all exposed areas.

We will not forget you if we have had to cancel your appointment, and those who have missed hygiene appointments in the past three months will be given priority once our fantastic hygienists are permitted to resume their care.

Please advise us if you have had contact with someone with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19 or if you are feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath, or a sore throat.

What is certain with this pandemic and life as we now know it, is that things are changing rapidly, and things will change again.

We thank you for being patient with us as we have implemented the restrictions required by the Government and relevant authorities to help keep everyone healthy and safe. We greatly appreciate your understanding and continued support.

We plan to be available for appointments Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by arrangement.
