I get asked if electric toothbrushes are better almost everyday and my answer is always YES

Not because manual toothbrushes are 'bad'

But because it takes a lot longer to do a truly good job with a manual brush. The research supports this but I also see the changes when my patients switch everyday.

Most of us brush too hard, rush and miss spots when we use a manual... I'll put my hand up and say I'm guilty of it too 🙋🏼‍♀️

If you feel like you're doing everything right but still struggling with inflammation, switching to an electric brush could be the answer.

Want to know which electric toothbrush I use and why... follow along and find out 🤍

One of the most important parts of prevention is identifying changes early... that's why proper assessments matter so much

Here's all the things I'm checking during your dental hygiene appointment:
1. Bleeding and inflammation
2. Gum pocket depths
3. Gum recession
4. Areas you're missing when cleaning
5. Dry mouth
6. Mouthbreathing
7. Signs of clenching and grinding
8. Changes to soft tissues in the mouth
9. Oral cancer screening
10. Changes in your general health that could be affecting your oral health
11. How medications are affecting your oral health
12. Tooth decay
13. Enamel wear
14. Jaw joint issues
15. Surface staining

Not only do I want to identify these things early but I want to find the root cause and help you manage or prevent future problems 🤍

One of the biggest reasons plaque gets missed is because you can’t actually see where it’s sitting.

Your mouth has curves, edges, tight spaces, cheeks, tongues and hard-to-reach areas everywhere.

So if it’s easy to miss dust on a flat kitchen bench… imagine how easy it is to miss plaque around your teeth and gums.

That’s exactly why I use disclosing solution during hygiene appointments at Floss.

It allows me to show you exactly where plaque is building up so we can make small tweaks to your brushing or flossing technique before it turns into inflammation, gingivitis or gum disease.

Brush smarter, not harder 🤍

I also send a weekly email with bite-sized oral health education just like this - simple, practical and easy to understand.

Following on from yesterday... here are the things I started doing after becoming a dental hygienist that completely changed my oral health

And honestly none of them were extreme

They were mostly small, consistent habits that helped support healthier gums, less inflammation and better long-term oral health overall.

1. Using disclosing tablets at home to check I'm cleaning properly
2. Switched to an electric toothbrush
3. Cleaning between my teeth every night
4. Carrying a water bottle with me everywhere to stay hydrated, rinse after eating/drinking and keep my saliva healthy
5. Using a tongue cleaner everyday
6. Storing my toothbrush in the cupboard
7. Only using mouthwash if I feel like I'm getting sick
8. Wearing a nightguard and retainer every night
9. Changing my toothbrush head every 3 months
10. Treating oral health as part of overall

Once I understood oral health it was easy to make little changes and I can show you how to do it too 🤍

Is there anything in this list you want to know more about?

Things I stopped doing after becoming a dental hygienist... and my teeth are healthier because of it

1. Using a hard bristled toothbrush
2. Ignoring bleeding gums
3. Brushing aggressively from side to side
4. Skipping brushing before bed
5. Assuming 'no pain' means everything is healthy
6. Keeping the same toothbrush head for months and months
7. Covering a wet toothbrush in a container
8. Brushing straight after breakfast
9. Snacking on chocolate all day
10. Using mouthwash everyday

Follow if you're serious about having a healthier mouth 🤍

Helping people reduce inflammation and genuinely improve their health is the most rewarding part of my job 🤍

Bad breath is one of the most common things people quietly worry about.

The smell usually comes from bacteria sitting
- on the tongue
- between the teeth
- or around unhealthy gums

A few things that can help:
✨ clean your tongue daily
✨ floss properly (not just brushing)
✨ stay hydrated
✨ have your gums professionally checked if the smell keeps returning

And no - mouthwash isn't the long-term solution.

You don't always feel gum disease and that's what makes it so easy to miss!

One of the biggest things I see in my clinic is patients who think everything is fine... until we actually measure what's going on.

Bleeding is usually the first sign, and no - it's not normal!

If you've noticed bleeding when brushing or flossing, it's worth checking properly.

This is exactly what I assess at every appointment.

There's one number I look at that tells me almost everything about your gum health...

It's your bleeding score.

Not how your gums look.
Not how often you brush.

But how much they bleed when I assess them.

Because healthy gums don't bleed.

So if I'm seeing bleeding - even if your gums look completely fine - it tells me there's inflammation underneath.

And that's often the very first sign that something isn't right.

This is exactly why a proper gum assessment matters...

Because without measuring it, you're just guessing.
