It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Anne-Maree’s husband Andrew.

As many of you know he has been battling prostate cancer for four and a half years and he left us quite suddenly in the end on the morning of the Saturday the 9th of July. Andrew and Anne-Maree had the most special of relationships dating back to the beginning of Dental School in 1978, after having first met as eleven year olds in 1972, half a century ago.

There are many tributes flowing on social media attesting to Andrew’s contribution to Rugby Union as an international referee, mentor and coach. Rugby Australia World Rugby Lesser known is that he was also a beautiful caring dentist, who like Anne-Maree always put his patients first. He was an ultimate professional with values reflecting simpler times, no doubt instilled in him by his gentle GP father Dr Brian Cole OAM who only passed away last year at the age of 91.

Anne-Maree always said if there was a picture of Andrew in the dictionary, the words next to it would say: “Others before self”. A more selfless human you would never meet. His family was his proudest achievement. They are all so close and are now enveloping Anne-Maree, loving and protecting her as Andrew would have wanted, while simultaneously coping with their own profound grief.

Andrew and Anne-Maree always looked for the good In people and found the positives in every situation. They were peas in the same pod. A huge void has been left for Anne-Maree but we know that the team at James Street Dentists and the beautiful patients we have the privilege to care for will wrap her in our love and help carry her through.

Andrew’s last words while holding her hand were: “It’s ok.”

Meet Dr Sylvia!! 👇👇

Dr Sylvia Lee graduated from the University of Otago with Credit in 2012 and worked in private practice in New Zealand where she quickly realised her enjoyment and passion in children’s dentistry. Children are not smaller adults, and require child specific care with a holistic approach to accommodate for their individual needs. With her special ability to build rapport with kids she is experienced in providing a calm and relaxing dental environment for her patients, that includes dental anxiety management techniques, so that they may achieve their dental health goals. She is aligned with the JSD philosophy that prevention is always better than cure and understanding the root cause of the problem is vital to successful outcomes. She has a special interest in early interceptive and jaw development treatments which she has trained within her scope of care by dedicating extensive time to numerous continuing education both locally and internationally. The experience of having her own child, Theo, inspired her to study further at her alma mater and she gained her post graduate diploma in paediatric dentistry with Distinction. She is excited to work alongside the all the star team at JSD to help our patients on their dental journey.
