To our patients:

Dr. Linda and the team wanted to provide an update on the health and safety precautionary measures we are taking at Killara Dental to protect our patients, our staff and our community from the COVID-19 pandemic.

We always have and continue to adhere to strict hygiene practices and cleaning standards that are approved by the Australian Department of Health, NSW Health and the Australian Dental Association. With that being said, we have adopted extra precautionary measures to reduce the risk of infection and to provide a safe environment.

These extra precautionary measures include:

- Having hand sanitisers readily available for patients (BEFORE and AFTER your appointment) and staff.

- Peroxide mouth rinse before dental procedures.

- Using rubber dam isolation to decrease possible exposure to infectious agents.

- Maintained sterilisation and disinfection of all dental equipment.

- Cleaning and disinfection of public areas frequently; including door handles and chairs.

- We have removed items that may be touched by multiple people throughout the day such as newspapers and toys from our reception room.

- Phone consultation with dentists (bookings only) for patients. [Please call to enquire]

- Patient evaluations

- Management of medical waste

We kindly ask patients to acknowledge the following:

- Patients and anyone accompanying the appointment (including children) are not allowed to enter if they have been overseas within the past 14 days, or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 - please reschedule your appointment if so.

- Patients and anyone accompanying the appointment (including children) are not allowed to enter if they have ANY of the following symptoms (regardless of travel history); fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, flu-like body aches, stuffy or runny nose, vomiting or diarrhoea - please reschedule your appointment if so.

Your health and safety are of the utmost importance. We wish to thank you for taking the time to read this and for your cooperation during these times.

For all bookings and or consultations, please contact us on 02 9418 2502.

31/10/2019

If kids are not breathing properly through their nose when they sleep they need to see a paediatric Ear Nose and Throat specialist. No child should suffer this way.
We encourage kids to be examined early before their first birthday in order to screen for this and refer when necessary.

Sometimes I just want to cry. I had a mum see me and she brought in this photo. What you are seeing is a young child (11 months) who is so obstructed by their tonsils that to try and breathe their chest wall is being sucked in and collapsing on itself due to excessive muscular activity. This child was dismissed by a GP as being OK because they had not had tonsillitis.

This is so very wrong and is a common and repeated experience. I am all for collegiality and mutual respect but this is just not right. This child is in extremis.

Please take note:
1. Tonsillectomy is most commonly done due to obstruction.
2. Paediatric ENTs could not care less if a child has never had tonsillitis if they are obstructed.
3. They don’t need to have sleep apnoea to warrant surgery
4. They don’t grow into their tonsils
5. This child is at risk of heart failure and brain damage
6. They are not too young for surgery.
7. They don’t need a sleep study.
8. It is a category 1 or 2 condition needing urgent attention within a few weeks- even 6 months is too long
9. See a paediatric ENT that focuses on airway problems and can quote the literature when providing an opinion.
10. Don’t ignore snoring or mouth breathing in kids.

I’m going to spend the next month posting on this. Enough is enough when cases like this are being dismissed.

This post needs to go viral. Please make it so. Kids need your help.

Does your child qualify for the free dental care with medicare? If you received a letter from medicare and are not sure how you can access the scheme talk to us today!

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare-funded dental scheme for kids where families can save hundreds, even thousands, of dollars a year. Millions of children are eligible, but just a third have taken it up because it's too confusing. ADA NSW has highlighted how this scheme must be promoted more effectively to help Australian children access treatment.
