Reasons to wear a mouthguard:

1. May help reduce concussion
2. Protects against soft tissue injuries
3. Protects against jaw joint injuries
4. Cushions teeth against impact
5. Helps prevent neck and jaw injuries
6. Helps prevent trips to the dentist (as much as it saddens us to say it, we know a trip to the dentist isn't anyone's idea of fun 😔)

You might be thinking, 'I know how to brush my teeth, I've been doing it for years!'

That may be true, but when something becomes routine, it’s easy to slip into autopilot and become a little complacent, which can mean the job isn’t done as well as it should be 😬

Here's our recommended tooth brushing technique:

🪥 Start at the same place and follow a pattern each time you brush. This will help ensure you clean all areas of your teeth.

🪥 Tilt your brush at a 45 degree angle to the tooth and gum (so that part of your brush is touching your tooth and part is touching your gum).

🪥 Using small circular movements, gently move your toothbrush over all surfaces of your teeth.

After brushing, your teeth should feel clean and free of that pre-brushing, fuzzy feeling!

Have you recently had your teeth professionally whitened? 😁 There are many things you can do to ensure your whitening results last as long as possible, including:

▫️ continuing to brush and floss daily
▫️ keeping up with regular dental cleans
▫️ avoiding food and drinks that stain teeth (e.g. red wine, tea & coffee)
▫️ avoiding smoking
▫️ booking in for minor touch-up when necessary - check with your dentist!

Brushing alongside a partner or family member can help ensure you brush more consistently and for longer. This is particularly helpful for young children who may have trouble brushing for a full two minutes. In short - get yourself a brushing buddy 👫

You don’t need a UV light to keep your toothbrush clean.

A thorough rinse after use, storing it upright so it can air-dry, and replacing it every 3 months (or when it appears worn) is more than enough for good hygiene.

Keeping toothbrushes separate and allowing them to dry properly does most of the work in preventing bacterial build-up 🦠

Tips on teaching your toddler to brush their teeth 🪥

🪥 Use a soft, small headed brush with a short arm
🪥 Use a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for under 3s, and pea-sized for older kids
🪥 Encourage them to brush for two minutes, twice a day
🪥 Help them brush until around age 6 - 7

Your child should begin visiting the dentist by age 2 to allow their dentist to monitor their oral health, growth, and development.

Have you experienced the moment of horror where you spy the floss in your bathroom and realise you can't remember the last time you used it? 😬 Don't worry, you're not alone. Everyone gets busy, but it's worthwhile setting yourself reminders to floss until it becomes second nature. Remember - a little time spent flossing now will help you avoid a lot of trouble down the track.

Most of us gain systemic fluoride from the foods we eat and from our water supply, but most dentists (including us) recommend a professional fluoride application twice a year.

This is because the fluoride used by dentists is stronger and provides a deeper level of protection from decay than systemic fluoride.

Rest assured, dentist-applied fluoride only takes a few minutes and comes in pleasant flavours - think fruit or bubblegum.
