When should your child start using toothpaste?

Children should start brushing their teeth with the assistance of a parent/guardian as soon as they have teeth. This starts a healthy routine and good habits from an early age, which then helps prevents costly treatment in future. Additionally, it creates a healthy attitude towards oral health and dental treatments early on.

Children shouldn’t use toothpaste until they are able to spit it out, which generally occurs by or after the age of two. The risk of starting too young is your child swallowing the toothpaste, which may cause a little bit of a belly ache. A child’s first toothpaste should have 500ppm of fluoride and only a smear should be applied to the brush bristle. The amount of toothpaste can increase to a pea size amount as they grow and are better with spitting out their toothpaste. Children at the ages of 6 years old are able to move onto adult toothpaste, which has at least 1400ppm of fluoride. Start off with a pea sized amount and gradually increase the amount when more of adult teeth erupt. Good brushing technique and fluoride exposure onto teeth is beneficial for every child’s oral healthcare, as it makes teeth stronger, kills bacteria and slows down decay. How much toothpaste is your child using?

LIFE AFTER BRACES...

When braces come off:
Having your braces removed is a reasonable to smile! Immediately after braces your teeth will feel 'slimy' while you adjust to not having any brackets stuck onto your teeth. Your braces will have kept the teeth in place and once removed there is potential for them to migrate back into their previous position or move out of place. To avoid this, retainers are custom made for your teeth to keep them in the correct position.

Immediate retainers should be worn throughout the day and only taken off during meals for as long as the clinician recommends.

After this period, if no movement has occurred your orthodontist or dentist may recommend wearing the retainer only at night, indefinitely.

Types of retainers:
There are two main types of retainers - removable and fixed. Removable retainers can be taken out of the mouth.

Fixed retainers usually take the form of a wire which are cemented into place onto the back of the front teeth. These can be kept in place for many years. Fixed retainers should be monitored on a regular basis as occasionally they snap or break and should be replaced.

Retainer care:
Retainers both fixed and removable should be reviewed at dental check ups by the dentist.

Removable retainers should be cleaned with water and a soft toothbrush when brushing- without the use of any toothpaste which can scratch the plastic or meta surfaces.

Fixed retainers can collect plaque in the mouth and need to be cleaned to avoid gum disease and inflammation as well as bleeding.

STRAIGHTEN YOUR SMILE

Your smile plays an integral role in how you feel about yourself and your appearance. Smiling can relieve stress by releasing endorphins, making you happier. In comparison, crooked and misaligned teeth not only causes image issues but more importantly makes cleaning more difficult.

Below are methods of treatment that address this issue. If you have any concern about the appearance of your teeth, consider these options below:

ORTHODONTICS FOR CHILDREN

At Concord Dental Practice we are able to detect really issues in the development of the jaws and teeth. We are able to provide advice and management on through early orthodontic interceptor treatment to potentially resolve these problems entirely.

BRACES

Orthodontic fixed braces can be used to correct gaps between teeth, overbite, cross bite, crooked teeth and more.

INVISALIGN

This method uses aligners to move teeth into their correct position. Although this is the most aesthetic option it requires the patient to meet certain criteria.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF TEETH WHEN SICK

As we are in the colder months of the year, it is important to understand how illness can affect oral health.

VOMITING
Vomiting can encourage enamel demineralisation! Fluids in your stomach are extremely acidic and gastric acids can damage enamel when pulled to the mouth.

What to do? Do not brush your teeth immediately after vomiting as acid sits on teeth, brushing can exacerbate damage by scrubbing acid onto your teeth. Instead, rinse your mouth with water to wash away acid before brushing.

SPREADING BACTERIA
Toothbrushes accumulate bacteria, saliva and blood. If are ill and share a toothbrush cup holder with other family members, it is crucial to isolate the toothbrush to avoid contamination.

What to do? Once you have recovered, throw away your old brush and use a new one.

DEHYDRATION
The body will lose fluids while fighting an infection, risking a higher chance of dehydration or dry mouth. Saliva is a buffer and washes away food particles and acids. Lack of it can increase decay and gingivitis risk.

What to do? Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

MEDICATON
Cough drops are meant to calm your cough and sooth the throat, but at the expense of your teeth. Cough syrups are high in such and glucose liquids, sugars that slowly dissolve in the mouth allowing bacteria to thrive.

What to do? Try to find sugar free cough lozenges. Avoid using cough syrups before going to bed. Always brush even after consuming medications before sleeping.

WHY DO I HAVE BLACK STAINS ON MY TEETH?

Staining on teeth can have a variety of causes; they can be attributed to not only poor brushing habits or coloured food, but also medications, supplements and bacteria.

- Foods and drinks such as tea/coffee and highly pigmented fruits can cause black stains.

- Poor oral hygiene can leave teeth looking yellow and dull

- Smoking or chewing to***co can develop stains

- Medications such as iron supplements can cause dark stains

- Genetics or metabolism can influence protein levels in saliva, producing more staining

Thin or broad bands of stains are commonly found along the gums lines or on the cheek surface of molars. This can occur for both adults and children.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Changing risks factors such as consumption of coloured beverages, food and smoking can help to decrease stain levels.

To effectively remove stains, a thorough check up, clean and polished must be completed by a clinician.

To keep stains off effectively, excellent oral hygiene must be maintained. Flosding regularly and brushing twice daily will ensure that teeth and gum are kept clean.

An occlusal splint which may also be called a night guard is a custom made hard plastic appliance that sits over the upper teeth. This appliance is worn only at night and taken off when you wake up. It is designed to protect your natural teeth, crowns and implants.
Why is there a need to wear a splint? To protect from uncontrolled clenching and grinding habits (Bruxism) during the night when you sleep.
Other benefits from wearing an occlusal splint is that it may relieve muscle tension and painful joint symptoms.

Each year, children and adults are involved in sports injuries causing damage to the teeth and jaw which could have been prevented or minimised with the use of a protective mouthguard.

Anyone who plays a contact sport including rugby league, AFL and soccer should wear a mouthguard both while playing and while training! Other contact sports such as netball, basketball and touch football can be at risk of unintentional collisions and face dental trauma.

A custom fitted mouthguard can be designed at Concord Dental Practice. They are personalised to your mouth which gives it optimum protection against any trauma, as well as making it easier to breathe and talk. Any mouthguard which is loose, ill fitted or damaged should be replaced. For children, a mouthguard may only last a season depending on their age and transitioning period of the teeth.

At Concord Dental Practice, we recommend the use of mouthguards for all contact and non-contact sports. We are able to take an impression of the teeth and create custom mouthguard for you and your child, providing best protection against injuries.

In recent years, various social media sites and influencers have begun trends on ‘natural’ methods of tooth whitening which include the use of coconut oil and activated charcoal. Due to the lack of evidence, these practices are not recommended as part of home oral hygiene and especially not as a replacement to brushing twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste.
Studies have even shown that using a chlorhexidine mouth rinse such as Savacol compared to oil pulling is much more effective in reducing damaging bacterial levels in your saliva. The Australian Dental Association has not approved either of these methods for use as official tooth whitening techniques.
The only ‘natural’ way to keep your teeth white and clean is to brush consistently with fluoridated toothpaste, and reduce the foods and drinks which leave stain on the teeth including tea, coffee and wine.
Approved Tooth Whitening Techniques
At Concord Dental Practice we offer 3 different methods of tooth whitening:
1. A comprehensive dental examination to determine the causes of discolouration on the teeth, this may be due to decay, mottling, antibiotic use or external causes such as coffee consumption and smoking.  After a diagnosis of the current state of your teeth we will be able to offer a treatment plan to bring the teeth to a healthy standard, in conjunction with a clean and polish from the dental hygienist.
2. ZOOM in-chair whitening can be offered to patients who want results fast! This can be completed in a single 90minute visit. It is important to note that any existing fillings or crowns you have will not change colour and may need replacement as they will not match the new shade of your teeth.
3. Poladay/night take home whitening kits are available for those who would like their teeth whitened at their own pace and can also be re-used over time with the purchase of more whitening liquid. This technique contains an agent which makes your teeth less sensitive and releases fluoride.
Tooth whitening is a simple and easy procedure; the staff at Concord Dental Practice can assist in answering any questions you may have and help you in getting a brighter and whiter smile!

Electric VS Manual Toothbrushes
Choosing a toothbrush can be a difficult task when faced with the vast array of products available. Manual and electric brushes have so many different sizes, styles, textures and added features making it difficult select.
When it comes to choosing between a manual or electric toothbrush, it is important to note that they are both EQUALLY effective in removing plaque and food stuck in the mouth but only if used correctly.  This makes it as a matter of preference but no matter the choice, the toothbrush must be kept in good condition.

The correct technique when brushing is achieved by holding the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle pointing towards the gum line with the bristles placed on both the teeth and gums. Moving the brush in small circular motions while gently sliding the brush under the gum will achieve optimum plaque control. Brushing must be done on the outside of the teeth, inside of the teeth and the biting surfaces of the teeth.
The bristles on any toothbrush wear and fray over time meaning we must keep them in excellent condition, replacing your toothbrush is recommended every 3 months. When choosing a brush size, a smaller head is better for access to the back teeth and hard to reach areas. Soft bristle brushes are also less abrasive on the gums, using a hard brush can often traumatize the gums, causing recession.

Sometimes, electric brushes are more suitable and recommended in the following cases for:
·         Children who have not developed the skills to effectively brush their teeth, in addition the cartoon characters and noises that the brush makes can encourage your child to make brushing an exciting experience.
·         Elderly who have arthritis or other disabilities may also find it easier to hold an electric toothbrush due to the bigger handle size
Always remember,
1.       Brushing your teeth in the morning after breakfast and at night before bed is going to maximize the amount of plaque removed
2.       Choosing a toothpaste that is fluoridated helps protect the outer enamel layer of the teeth
Flossing daily removes the food stuck in between your teeth is also essential, no matter which brush you use!
