Something that’s really stayed with me: we flinch at what it costs to invest in our health, but we rarely add up what illness costs us.

Illness costs money, of course, but it also costs time, energy, sleep, confidence, and the moments you miss with the people you love.

Your mouth is a good place to see this. Gum inflammation doesn’t stay in your gums. It’s linked to heart health, blood sugar, pregnancy outcomes and more. Prevention can feel expensive, but treating disease nearly always costs more.

So the question isn’t “Can I afford to invest in my health?” It’s “Can I afford not to?”

What’s one investment in your health you’re glad you made? Tell me in the comments 👇

Some remineralising creams are built around CPP-ACP, a milk-derived protein that carries calcium and phosphate to the tooth surface and holds it there. Dr Maria Florou explains how these creams can be added for specific cases, especially chalky white spots on enamel.

There's one important caution: because these products are milk based, anyone who can't have dairy, whether because of allergies or other reasons, should steer away from them.

If dairy is an issue for you, speak with your dental professional about the other options available.

Saliva carries the minerals your enamel needs, but it can only help if it can actually reach the tooth surface.

Dr Maria Florou explains why plaque sitting on top of the tooth gets in the way, and why good hydration and good oral hygiene work together as a simple two-in-one habit.

Brushing, flossing or using a water flosser, whichever works for you, helps disturb plaque so saliva can reach the teeth that need to be remineralised. Which one fits your routine best? Tell us in the comments.

Not every cavity starts with a hole. The earliest visible stage of decay is often a chalky white patch of enamel called a white spot lesion, where the surface is still intact but the structure underneath is already breaking down.

Dr Maria Florou explains why this stage matters so much. With minerals added and acid kept off, early damage can harden back again. Miss that window, and you may be paying for a filling instead.

Have you ever been told you had an early white spot on a tooth? Let us know in the comments.

Tooth decay doesn't happen overnight. Dr Maria Florou describes it as a running tug of war: acid from food, drinks, bacteria and plaque pulls minerals out of your enamel, and your saliva, diet and habits push them back in. That balance plays out every day, for years. It also explains an important detail: enamel can't regrow, but softened enamel in the early stages can genuinely be rehardened. Understanding the tug of war is the first step to tilting it in your favour.

Which side do you think is winning in your mouth right now?

Toothpaste boxes say they repair enamel. Social media says it never comes back. So can teeth actually rebuild themselves?

Dr Maria Florou explains why enamel is the hardest substance your body makes, even harder than bone, and why that hardness comes at a price. Once your adult teeth have formed, the cells that built the enamel are gone, leaving a dense mineral shell with no living workforce inside to maintain it. That's why chipped, cracked or worn enamel can't be poured back in the same way. But that's only half of the story.

Did you think enamel could grow back like bone?

CPAP remains the benchmark for significant apnoea, but it's not the only option.
Joint guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine recommend oral appliances for plain snoring, and for apnoea patients who can't tolerate the mask.
A custom device moves the jaw slightly forward. Jaw forward, tongue forward, airway open.

A landmark New England Journal of Medicine study followed over 700 adults, measured their sleep in a lab, then tracked their blood pressure for years.
The more disturbed their breathing at night, the higher the odds of developing high blood pressure, independent of weight and other factors.
Dr Maria Florou is also careful to say that snoring alone doesn't mean your heart is in trouble.

Told for years that you grind because of stress? There may be more to it.
A systematic review of sleep studies concluded that obstructive sleep apnoea is a clinical risk factor for night-time grinding.
That's why heavy wear in someone who also snores makes a dentist think about the airway, not just the teeth.
