THE TRUTH ABOUT BAD BREATH…

bad breath, or halitosis, often gets blamed on garlic or coffee, but if it’s persistent, even after brushing, it’s usually pointing to something else.

bacteria buildup on the tongue and along the gumline is behind most cases. this is often in areas that get missed during a normal brushing routine.

ongoing bad breath can also be an early sign of gum disease, so it’s worth more attention than a quick mint or mouthwash fix.

brushing your tongue, staying hydrated, and regular cleans all make a real difference, but if halitosis persists, it’s worth getting checked rather than just masking it.

BRACES OR ALIGNERS

1. traditional braces: these are metal brackets and wires that are adjusted regularly over time. braces are highly effective for more complex alignment issues and can’t be removed by the patient, which also means no risk of forgetting to wear them.
2. clear aligner: often referred to as invisalign, this is a clear, removable aligner swapped out every couple of weeks. it is more discreet and flexible, but relies on consistency and must be worn 20-22 hours a day.

the main differences between these two options are that braces mean some food restrictions and extra care around cleaning, while invisalign is removable for eating but requires more personal discipline.

timelines vary depending on the case rather than which option you choose, and the cost of invisalign is generally more expensive than that of traditional braces.

for significant bite issues or more involved movement, traditional braces are often still the more reliable option. clear aligners tend to suit mild to moderate cases best.

DO YOU GRIND YOUR TEETH?

teeth grinding, or bruxism, is the clenching or grinding of teeth. often it happens with out your realising, especially during sleep.

chipped and sensitive teeth, a dull headache when you wake up, jaw soreness, and sleep disruption can all point to grinding, even if you’ve never noticed yourself doing it.

stress and anxiety are the most common triggers of bruxism, but it can also be linked to medication, lifestyle habits, or excess caffeine.

left untreated, grinding can wear down enamel, crack teeth, and put ongoing strain on your jaw joint, often without pain until the damage is more advanced.

a custom night guard is the most common solution for bruxism. it protects your teeth while you sleep and is far more comfortable and effective than store bought options.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN A DENTAL CHECKUP?

before anything else, we check in on how you’re feeling, any concerns you have, and whether anything’s changed since your last visit. no surprises.

we look at the inside and outside of your mouth as well as your bite for anything unusual. this is done gently and doesn’t involve any tools that cause pain.

not every visit needs them, but x-rays help us spot things beneath the surface that aren’t visible during a regular check, like early decay between teeth.

a thorough clean removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing at home can’t fully reach, especially along the gumline.

we’ll walk you through anything we noticed, answer any questions, and agree on next steps together. nothing gets done without you knowing first.

SIGNS YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE…

🪥persistent bad breath: everyone has off days, but bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing can be a sign of gum disease, acid reflux or a deeper dental issue, not just something a mint can fix.

🪥bleeding gums: this is often mistaken as normal, but healthy gums shouldn’t bleed. it can be an early sign of gum disease, and is much easier to treat the earlier it’s caught.

🪥sensitivity to cold: the occasional twinge can be normal, but ongoing sensitivity can point to worn enamel, a cavity, or a cracked tooth. it’s always worth getting checked before it becomes a bigger issue.

🪥clicking jaw: a clicking or popping jaw can indicate teeth grinding and jaw misalignment. if left untreated, it can worsen over time and start causing headaches or neck pain too.

HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH…

🦷 use a soft brush to clean your teeth because it’s the most safe and effective option.

🦷 position your toothbrush half on the gum and half on the tooth.

🦷 while keeping your brush at a 45 degree angle, gently sweep it side to side.

🦷 repeat this technique for the inside surfaces.

🦷 don’t forget the biting surfaces!

CHILDREN’S DENTISTRY…

all our dentists love treating children, and take pride in supporting the development of strong oral hygiene habits that promote lifelong dental health. we aim to create positive early experiences that encourage confidence and ongoing care.

we like to see children from an early age as it allows us to monitor the eruption of your child’s teeth and jaw development. the benefit to the child is that they adjust to being in the chair, having their teeth counted and polished, and attending regular visits to maintain oral health.
