The Gum Specialists

The Gum Specialists Dr Paul Tsai is the Principal Periodontist who started the practice in 2014.

Slowly the Practice grew and now blessed with the support from Dr Fady Bassily, Dr Wensy Leung and Ms Inggrid Wijaya(Periodontal Hygienist) helping to reduce the long wait times. Paul completed his dental degree with Class I Honours from The University of Queensland in 2003. Since then he had been in private practice in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Taiwan for 5 years before he moved to Boston for his

specialist Periodontist residency at Boston University. During his residency, he was awarded the Ruben Scholarship for academic and clinical excellence in periodontology. While working in Dallas, Texas after his residency, he also successfully achieved Board Certification as a Diplomate from the highly regarded American Board of Periodontology. At The Gum Specialists in Burwood, his practice includes all facets of periodontics and implant dentistry with a special interest in soft and hard tissue grafting, including sinus lifts and block grafts for implants.

We are kicking off a new series dedicated to Gum Grafting. We know surgery can sound intimidating, so we want to break down exactly how it works.

Today’s Focus: Connective Tissue Grafting using the Tunneling Technique.

Instead of cutting the gum open, we create a small 'tunnel' to insert the tissue. This method covers the exposed root while keeping the surrounding gum intact.

Have you ever wonder why some teeth play "hide and seek"? 🦷🙈

Sometimes, when a patient has a small dental arch, there isn't enough room for the adult canines to grow in properly. Instead of erupting, they stay "stuck" behind the gum and bone.

The Solution: Canine Exposure Surgery
1️⃣ We gently open the gum and bone to find the hidden tooth.
2️⃣ We attach a tiny orthodontic bracket and a delicate gold chain to the canine.
3️⃣ The dentist/orthodontist uses that chain to "guide" the tooth into its rightful place in the smile.
