It's a common question with not such a simple answer.

Once you have been diagnosed as a periodontal patient, you will always be considered at risk of future gum disease. It is a condition which requires long term management rather than one off treatment to provide a cure. This is why we prefer the term "Supportive Periodontal Treatment" (SPT).

🦷 Control of plaque above the gum line - Periodontists have tools and tricks for almost every situation to make you a super cleaner!
🦷 Meticulous control of plaque below the gum line - once gum pockets are deeper than 3mm then special tools are required
🦷 Assessment of any LOCAL factors contributing to gum disease - root grooves, fillings below the gum line, dental implants and many more factors can complicate how gum disease behaves. These factors can change between appointments and need to be mananged.
🦷 Assessment of any SYSTEMIC factors contributing to gum disease - your general health is a significant contributor to gum disease activity. Reassessment of changes is essential at every visit and can change how often you need to attend for SPT. Your periodontist may liaise directly with your medical practitioner/s for your best health outcomes.
🦷 Surgical intervention - the need for surgical intervention is a highly personalised decision. Periodontists receive extensive training during their specialist degree in all the types of surgery which can be considered, and most importantly when they are appropriate for you.

We love our general dentists because they are the "general managers" of your oral health and will direct you where you need to go for the best help. Periodontists are highly specialised in all things gums and some people just need a bit more than a regular scale and clean.

If you're worried at all, feel free to chat to your local dental professional.Alternatively you can book an appointment directly with a Periodontist in your area without the need for referral.

Gingivitis literally means gum (gingiva) inflammation (itis).
Everyone suffers from gingivitis at some point in their life and treatment is often as simple as improving your home care and/or stopping by your local dental professional for professional cleaning. A healthy bleeding score after having your gums examined is considered to be 10% of sites.

Most commonly we talk about gingivitis which is due to plaque accumulation. You may notice some blood in your toothpaste when you spit out in to the sink, or blood left behind on food (such as an apple) after you take a bite. This is a red flag that you have active gingivitis and it needs to be properly treated.

Gingivitis is NOT:
🚩 from brushing too hard
🚩 because you take blood thinning medication
🚩 normal, even in pregnancy

If you have taken all the normal steps to control gingivitis but your gums still bleed, it may be time to see your local periodontist to discuss whether deeper inflammation exits, or perhaps there is a more uncommon cause such as autoimmune disease, allergy or viral infection.

Next time you have a dental check up, ask your professional if your bleeding score is less than 10%. If not, you have some work to do!

Gum disease occurs when tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth (your gums) becomes infected. 🩸🦷

The infection of the gum is caused by plaque, which is bacteria that forms on teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease:
πŸ’’ Gingivitis β€” a mild form which occurs when gums become red and swollen. Gums may bleed easily when they're brushed and cause bad breath.
πŸ’’ Periodontitis β€” a severe form which occurs when gums become weak, creating gaps for germs to get trapped. This leads to increased swelling and over time your teeth may become loose or fall out.

You've probably already guessed it, but the best way to prevent gum disease is to brush your teeth and gums twice a day, and floss once a day. It's important to do this, even if your gums are bleeding. πŸͺ₯

If you think you may have gum disease, it's best to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Gingivitis can be cured without permanent damage, but periodontitis can't be cured, only controlled.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause significant changes to our everyday lives. Dentists have been placed under restrictions from governing bodies to prevent the spread of the virus and protect patients and staff. These restrictions mean that we can no longer provide many of our patients with their planned dental treatment. However we are available if you have any emergency dental needs and we can provide treatment in certain instances. Please call the practice to discuss your situation and our staff will let you know if we can offer any assistance. Please see our website for further information regarding the current restrictions.

Due to the increasing community transmission of Covid-19 and increasing restrictions on daily practices in Australia, dental clinics have been advised to limit the care they provide to treatment for dental emergencies and patients requiring urgent dental treatment only.
