A root canal may do more than save a tooth.
Researchers from King's College London followed patients with apical periodontitis—a bacterial infection around the root of a tooth—for two years after successful root canal treatment. They found improvements in blood markers related to inflammation, glucose metabolism, and lipid metabolism, suggesting that treating chronic dental infections may have benefits beyond oral health.
Scientists believe the link may be driven by inflammation. When a tooth infection persists, bacteria and inflammatory molecules can influence the rest of the body. Over time, chronic inflammation is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other systemic conditions. After successful treatment, the researchers observed metabolic changes consistent with a healthier inflammatory profile.
The study does not prove that root canal treatment prevents heart disease. However, it adds to growing evidence that oral health and overall health are closely connected—and that treating dental infections may contribute to better long-term systemic health.
