Removing teeth may be the right option for some children. But depending on your child’s jaw development, facial profile, bite and degree of crowding, there may be another way to create the room their teeth need.

What should you actually be looking for in your 7-year-old’s smile?

It’s not just crooked teeth.

At this age, we’re looking at how the jaws, bite and adult teeth are developing, as well as signs that may be worth investigating further.

Mouth breathing.
Snoring or restless sleep.
Crowding or a narrow smile.
Persistent thumb or finger habits.
A bite that doesn’t look quite right.

But a sign is not a diagnosis.

A narrow upper jaw doesn’t tell us why it developed.
Crowding doesn’t automatically mean early treatment is needed.
Snoring doesn’t diagnose sleep apnoea.
And one finding on its own may mean very little.

We look at the whole picture.

Sometimes orthodontic treatment is appropriate. Sometimes the best approach is simply to monitor growth and development.

And sometimes what we find means a referral to another healthcare professional, such as an ENT specialist, sleep physician or GP, may be appropriate for further assessment.

That’s why an orthodontic assessment at 7 doesn’t mean treatment at 7.

It’s about understanding what is developing normally, what deserves further investigation, and what can simply be watched as your child grows.

MARPE (Mini-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) is an orthodontic treatment that may be suitable for selected patients to widen the upper jaw.
At Mars Orthodontics, your consultation is with Specialist Orthodontist Dr Carmen Karadeniz, who uses a detailed clinical examination and 3D CBCT imaging when indicated to assess your teeth, jaws and surrounding structures before discussing the options appropriate for you.

Every treatment is planned by a specialist orthodontist. Our in-house 3D x-ray (CBCT) lets us plan around the roots of your teeth, not just the crowns you can see. Your treatment fee includes:

• Unlimited refinements (extra aligners), if needed

For decades, adults were told the upper jaw can’t be widened without jaw surgery. MARPE anchors the expander to bone rather than teeth, which is what makes skeletal expansion possible for many adults.
