Subtle changes with a big impact!

Retention after orthodontic treatment is a big deal, and we really mean it when we say retention is for life. As we age, our jaw bones, gums and teeth naturally change and shift. This means that even if you naturally have straight teeth as a teenager, this is not guaranteed to stay the same throughout your life!

Wearing a removable set of retainers at night is a simple and easy way to maintain your smile and avoid shifting of teeth and wear if you clench and grind. Don’t forget to get a new set every 1-2 years or if you notice they are cracked or worn.

If your teeth have shifted since your braces as a teenager, don’t worry. Clear aligner treatment can be a comfortable and effective way to realign your teeth. Just don’t forget, retention retention retention!

It’s never too late to consider orthodontic treatment. However, the key to success in adult patients is to start with the end goal in mind.

Here we were presented with a 48 year old male patient whose main concern was not aesthetics but his gum disease that had progressed over time due to difficulty cleaning his crowded teeth. He had also had a tooth extracted due to decay and wanted a plan that could improve his function as well make maintaining his oral health easier.

Clear aligner treatment can be an excellent option for patients with stable gum disease as there are no wires and brackets. Tooth movement can be controlled extremely well and hygiene is rarely an issue as you are able to brush and floss as normal.

A comprehensive approach with periodontal treatment, Invisalign clear aligners and bioclear composite bonding to close black triangles was used to achieve this result.
