Excellent (and intensive) 3-Day seminar/workshop on cranial facial pain and sleep medicine. The expert lecturers were nothing short of amazing. I’ll do my best to incorporate what I have learnt to help more people.

I believe a lot of shoulder, neck, and jaw pains are the result of incorrect use of the body.

The body is arranged on an alternating stability-mobility continuum. If the sequence is reversed, muscles and structures designed for mobility and fluidity would have to work extra hard to provide stability, while structures designed for stability would have to contort to provide mobility. This results in pain and dysfunction.

Treating the painful area may provide some symptomatic relief but will not solve the problem because the problem is systemic and not local. The goal is to return the body to the correct sequence and function, and the problem would reverse itself.

It's all in this little booklet I wrote a while back.

TMJ Dysfunction and Human Tensegrity

If you have a jaw problem, you should seek medical and dental treatment.

However, if your jaw still feel tight, you should look at the problem more holistically.

Your jaw is unique because it is not fixed to another bone, like your elbow joint. It is like a hammock, suspended between the skull and your hyoid bone, which is suspended in your neck not fixed to anything either. The myofascial structures in front of the neck resemble a series of elastic bands.

Do this very simple experiment yourself: stand relaxed and upright, feel how your upper and lower teeth are related to each other. Now bend forwards, backwards, side to side, and change your pelvic tilt. You will find the jaw position naturally changes to different posture.

This is because the muscles, joints and bones in the body are not separated, but work together as a single tensegrity unit. Everything pulls on everything else. You cannot successfully treat your jaw problems without conditioning the rest of the body.

I have mapped some of these lines that pulls onto the jaw that spread to the rest of the body. Condition these lines and your jaw problems will improve.

Feel free to PM me if you would like to understand more.

Less PAIN, more POWER, under 1 MINUTE

Of course, you should do the whole routine whenever possible; but if you have only 1 minute, this is what you would do.

Skanda #1: Breathe in and fill your Dantian, then over fill it until as if “air” fills up the entire body from fingers to toe, then breathe out slowly, and relax. It should take approx. 6sec to breathe in, 6sec to breathe out, then as long as you’d like to relax. Repeat 3 times.

Skanda #2: Stretch from feet to head through your back, fingers to fingers, and feet to fingers, as much as you can, simultaneously. Hold for approx 4sec. Then relax, feel as if “air” is filling up your skin, for as long as you’d like. Repeat 3 times.

Skanda #3: Stretch up, palms facing up. Make sure your shoulders are down. Feel as if you are pushing something up out of your palms; then push down as if you are pushing something out through your feet. Repeat 3 times. Then put your arms down and relax for as long as you like.

As a dentist, I am no stranger to RSI pains. As a Martial Arts practitioner, I need to build power and fluidity. As a father of two and running a busy clinic, I have very little spare time.

These three moves are literally LIFE SAVERS, and is the best thing you could do in under a minute.

Jaw (TMJ) Pain and Dysfunction, Biomechanics Perspective

Your spine looks and behave like a bow, while the myofascial lines in front of the spine act like strings. The whole system functions harmoniously when the bow is stable and the bowstring is properly supported and moves without stagnation.

Your lower jaw is not fixed to your head like a door hinge, but floats/suspended in a network of elastic bands between your skull and your thorax. Instability of your core and your spine (and malocclusion) causes erratic movement of the jaw. Your jaw muscles may also tense up to improve stability of the system. These factors, in my opinion, are the major causes of jaw tightness, discomfort and pain.

Of course, your dentist can make you a splint to be worn on your teeth to remove your irregular bite, but that’s only one aspect of possible causes, plus in a health jaw the teeth should not touch while you are at rest anyway.

The logical conclusion, therefore, is to stabilise and balance your core, and to promote fluidity of movement of your entire body.

You know you are doing something right when you keep receiving presents from clients.

So last week I saved her seemingly irreparable tooth by spending 2hrs rebuilding it out of composite, creating perfect form and function (it’s my OCD thing). So today she bought me a present, and my day is brighter for it. Thank you!

Some of you may be aware that I have developed and written a book on strength training call Practical Tensiometrics.

While my book focuses mainly on using the "Iron Wires" within your body to generate and manipulate power, it's potential as a physical and mental treatment modality is vast, as it strengthens, balances, and brings you conscious awareness of the inner workings of your Mind-Body.

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is one of the more complicated joints in the body. Sufferers of TMJ pain dysfunction syndrome (TMJPDS) often suffer for years without relief.

I will be applying the Tensiometric Methods to help sufferers of TMJPDS. Lots of studying and experimentations ahead. Stay tuned.

Not out of the woods yet, but restriction is dropping back to Level 2 meaning we can begin doing preventive work next week and not just emergencies. We are still not allowed extensive procedures and cleaning has to be done by hand.

At the current moment, only genuine urgent conditions are to be treated, and what we are allowed to do is restricted. In time, I foresee as Level of Restrictions elevates, what we are allowed to do will be even more limited. No need to stress though, in the worst scenario you can always seek help at hospital emergencies. In Australia, have one of the best health care systems in the World.

However, if you do have any concerns, talk to your dentist NOW. Do not wait till the last minute when help is difficult to find. Stay away from hospital emergencies if possible so our frontline healthcare providers (heroes) can focus on combating the COVID-19.

Take care, we will get through this.
