Did you know that the natural colour of healthy teeth can vary from person to person? 😁

Your tooth colour is influenced by several factors, including the thickness and translucency of your enamel and the colour of the dentine underneath. Genetics and ageing can also play a role.

In fact, perfectly white teeth aren’t necessarily healthier teeth.

Over time, teeth can also naturally appear a little darker as enamel becomes thinner and more of the underlying dentine shows through.

If you would like to brighten your smile, professional teeth whitening may be an option, depending on your individual circumstances. Our dentists can assess your teeth and oral health and discuss whether whitening is suitable for you and what results may realistically be expected.

Changes in the colour of a single tooth or unusual discolouration can sometimes have other causes, so it’s always worth mentioning any noticeable changes to our dentist.

When it comes to your teeth, it’s not only what you eat that matters, but how often you eat it.

Each time you have something sugary, bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack the enamel on your teeth.

Constantly snacking or sipping on sugary drinks throughout the day means your teeth are exposed to these acid attacks more frequently, giving them less time to recover between meals.

A few simple habits can help:

• Keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes where possible
• Choose tooth-friendly snacks between meals
• Drink water throughout the day
• Avoid slowly sipping sugary drinks over long periods

Small changes to when you snack can make a difference to your oral health.

🪥 When should children start brushing their own teeth?

Learning to brush independently is an important milestone, but young children usually need a helping hand for longer than you might think.

While it’s great to encourage children to have a go themselves, they may not yet have the coordination needed to thoroughly clean every surface of every tooth.

As a general guide, parents should continue to help and supervise brushing until around 8 years of age, although every child is different.

A few tips to make brushing easier:

🦷 Brush twice a day using an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste
🪥 Let your child brush first, then have a parent help finish the job
⏱️ Aim for two minutes each time
👀 Continue supervising while they’re developing their brushing skills
😊 Make brushing part of the family’s regular morning and bedtime routine

Building good brushing habits early can help children maintain good oral health as they grow.
Would you like us to join in the learning too? 😊

Feel free to book an appointment with Dr DJ, who can help your little one learn about looking after their teeth while making their visit to the dentist fun, positive and educational. 🤩

We all know water is important for our health, but did you know it also plays an important role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy?

Drinking water throughout the day can help:

• Wash away food particles and bacteria
• Prevent dry mouth by supporting healthy saliva flow
• Neutralise acids that can contribute to tooth decay
• Keep your mouth feeling fresh
• Reduce how often your teeth are exposed to sugary or acidic drinks

And here in Australia, drinking fluoridated tap water can provide an added benefit by helping to strengthen and protect teeth against decay.

So next time you’re thirsty, your smile has another reason to choose water! 💦

Wisdom teeth are our third and final set of molars. They were useful for our ancestors, whose diets required more chewing. Today, they are often unnecessary, and some people don’t have enough space for them to erupt properly.

Wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems, and not everyone needs them removed. However, because they sit at the back of the mouth, they can be difficult to clean and may become partially or fully impacted.

Depending on their position, wisdom teeth can be associated with:

• Pain or tenderness
• Swollen or irritated gums
• Food trapping around the tooth
• Tooth decay or gum disease in hard-to-clean areas
• Pressure on nearby teeth
• Partial or full impaction

Some wisdom teeth may also need monitoring even if they aren’t causing symptoms.

If you notice changes around your wisdom teeth, experience discomfort, or have concerns, a dental examination can help determine what’s happening and whether treatment or monitoring is needed.

Oakdale Dental recently introduced a state-of-the-art in-house CBCT machine. When appropriate, CBCT imaging provides detailed 3D scans to help our dentists assess wisdom teeth and surrounding structures.

Your toothbrush works hard every day, but it doesn’t last forever.

If the bristles are looking bent, frayed or flattened, they’re no longer cleaning your teeth as effectively.

As a general guide, replace your toothbrush:
✅ Every 3 to 4 months
✅ After you’ve been sick
✅ Sooner if the bristles become worn

It’s a simple habit that can help keep your smile healthy and your brushing routine working at its best.

When did you last replace yours? 🦷

Did you know that soft drinks can affect your teeth even if they’re sugar-free?

Many soft drinks contain acids that can gradually wear away tooth enamel, increasing the risk of sensitivity, discolouration and tooth wear over time.

Here are a few simple ways to help protect your smile:

✅ Choose water when you can
✅ Drink soft drinks in one sitting rather than sipping throughout the day
✅ Rinse your mouth with water afterwards
✅ Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth

Your teeth work hard every day. A few small changes can help keep them healthy for years to come.

Looking after your smile starts with prevention.
