Do I need a sensitive toothpaste? Tooth sensitivity is caused by the loss of protective enamel or gum recession which then exposes the more sensitive under-layer of dentine.
Recession of the gums is the most common reason for sensitivity. Recession occurs frequently because of over brushing at the gum margin, using too hard brush or brushing technique, clenching or grinding (often done at night while sleeping) or at times of stress. Inflammation of the gums (periodontal disease) over a long period of time leads to loss of gum height and concavities in teeth at the gum line. The result is teeth become very sensitive to cold, sweet, spicy, or acidic foods and drinks giving a sharp pain that is very uncomfortable.
Sensitive toothpastes work by blocking up and/or coating the exposed areas and give great relief from the discomfort.
Use sensitive toothpastes:
• Instead of normal toothpaste
• Twice a day to clean all the tooth surfaces including the gum line.
• Leave it on to work for as long as possible by spitting out the excess but don’t rinse.
• Carry a small tube for spot application during the day to use before and after eating or drinking a trigger food
