🌟Sports Mouthguards 🌟

Mouthguards protect teeth from damage when playing sports. They should be worn during training and sporting games.

✨Who needs a mouthguard?
All children and adults are recommended to wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports.
Some sports may not be called a contact sport but there is a high risk of injury to the teeth and mouth. It is important to wear a mouthguard for these sports too.

✨How to look after your mouthguard
• Clean your mouthguard with cool water and liquid hand soap.
• Store it in a protective case.
• Write your name on your mouthguard and its case.
• Do not put your mouthguard in boiling water or leave it in the sun. This can make it change shape.
• Do not chew on your mouthguard.

✨Types of damage that can happen
• Teeth can be cracked or fractured.
• Teeth can be knocked completely out of the mouth.
• Teeth can be moved backwards, forwards, or sideways in the mouth, making them look crooked.
• The nerves inside teeth can be damaged and slowly die.
• The jaw bone can be fractured.
• The tongue, lips or gums can become cut, bruised or swollen. These injuries can lead to dental treatment for the rest of your life.

✨Store-bought mouthguard
• Often fit poorly
• Provide less protection
• Can affect speech and breathing

✨Custom mouthguard
• Comfortable
• Easy to breathe & speak
• Stays securely in place
• Greatest level of protection

✨Steps to get a custom-fitted mouthguard
Step 1 - Your dentist will take a mold of your teeth or scan your teeth with a 3D scanner to make a 3D model of your teeth.
Step 2 - A mouthguard is made using your 3D model so it will only fit your teeth.
Step 3 - Pick up your mouthguard. Your dentist will check that it stays in place and protects your teeth well.
Step 4 - Wear your mouthguard at every training session and during every game.

🌟Wisdom Teeth🌟

The adult third molar teeth are often called ‘wisdom teeth’. They are the last teeth to appear in the mouth around 18-25 years of age.

🦷Impacted wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are often impacted. This means that something is stopping them from pushing all the way into the mouth. For example, there may not be enough space between the tooth in front and the bone behind so the tooth cannot push all the way into the mouth.

Wisdom teeth that are stuck half in the mouth and half under the gums can cause problems. Common problems can include:
• Infection
• Pain
• Gum disease
• Tooth decay

Cysts can sometimes develop around wisdom teeth
that stay under the gums.

🦷Removing wisdom teeth
There are several reasons why wisdom teeth may be removed.
• They are impacted.
• They are at risk of or have tooth decay or gum disease.
• The gum around the wisdom tooth keeps getting infected.
• A cyst has developed around the tooth.

🦷When is the best time to remove
wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth that cause problems or are at high risk of causing problems in the future are best removed at a younger age. Removing impacted wisdom teeth by
age 25 is easier than doing so at an older age. These teeth can be removed at any age.

🌟Sports Drinks 🌟

Sports drinks may damage your teeth if you drink them too often. They can cause tooth decay and tooth erosion.

🌟What are sports drinks?
• Sports drinks are used to rehydrate during or after exercise.
• They are made of water and electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. Sugar and food acids are also added.
• Non-professional sports people do not need to drink sports drinks after exercising or playing sport.

🪥How to protect your teeth from sports drinks
- Choose water to stay hydrated.
If you drink a sports drink,
• do not swish it around or hold it in your mouth before swallowing,
• do not open the drink cap with your teeth, and
• have a drink of water after finishing the sports drink to wash it from your mouth.

🦷 Ingredients that can damage teeth:
🌟Sugar
• Drinking too many sugary drinks can cause tooth decay.
🌟Food acids
• Sugar-free sports drinks are available. They do not include sugar but still include food acids.
• Food acids in drinks make the drink acidic. Acids in drinks can lead to tooth erosion.

💫On average, a 600ml sports drink contains:
🍬8.5 teaspoons added sugar (34 grams)
💧Acidic (2.7 - 3.14 pH)

🦷Dental Health Week 🦷 3-9 August 2026

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the look of your teeth and smile. This may involve changing the shape, colour or position of teeth, or replacing missing teeth. Treatments can range from minor fixes, like repairing a chipped tooth, to more complex procedures such as straightening teeth.

🌟Before you start treatment – go see
your dentist:

• Treat any dental disease first. Your health is the priority.
• Identify the cause of the unsatisfactory appearance of your teeth.
• Discuss suitable treatment options.
• Develop a realistic plan that suits your needs.

🌟What are some common types
of cosmetic treatment?

🪥Whitening
Bleaching gel is used at home or in clinic to lighten natural teeth. This whitens natural tooth structure but does not whiten fillings, dentures or crowns.

🪥Orthodontics
Braces or thin clear plastic trays that are used to move teeth position and often straighten teeth.

🪥Veneers
A thin layer of filling or ceramic material glued onto the front tooth surface. Some
of the tooth surface may need to be polished off to create space for the material.

🪥Crowns
A ceramic or metal shell that covers your entire tooth. Removal of tooth structure is usually required to make space for the crown.

🪥Implants
A titanium screw placed in the jaw bone, onto which a ceramic tooth is attached, to replace a missing tooth.

🪥Dentures
A removable set of teeth to replace missing teeth.

Some treatments are more complex than others and need ongoing care. There is no single “best” option and what’s right for you depends on your goals and oral health. Speak with your dentist to find the best approach for you.
