Wondering if you can whiten your teeth with braces? It depends on your type.

Clear Aligners: Whitening is usually fine, with strips, gels, and professional treatments all working to different degrees.

Lingual Braces: Since brackets are behind the teeth, whitening the front surfaces is possible.

Metal/Ceramic Braces: Best to hold off. Whitening products won’t reach under the brackets, leaving uneven results when they come off.

In the meantime, you can help prevent staining by brushing after every meal, flossing daily, limiting your intake of coffee, tea, and red wine, and keeping up with professional cleanings as advised.

Just got braces? Here’s how to take the edge off soreness

Mild pain after braces is fitted or tightened is normal. It usually peaks in the first 24 to 72 hours, then settles as your mouth adapts.

A few tips at Fox Orthodontics we recommend:

🧊 Cold foods like yoghurt, smoothies, jelly and ice blocks for relief
🍲 Soft meals like pasta, soup or mashed veggies for a day or two
🚿 Warm saltwater rinses to soothe sore gums
🦷 Orthodontic wax over brackets that are rubbing
💊 Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed
💧 Staying hydrated to support healing
