A DAY IN THE LIFE OF:
a Steri nurse 😷⚒️🦠
A dental sterilisation nurse (often called a “steri nurse”) plays an important role in infection control and patient safety in a dental clinic. Their main job is to clean, disinfect, sterilise, organise, and maintain dental instruments and equipment so they are safe to use for every patient.

Typical duties include:

* Cleaning and sterilising dental instruments after procedures
* Operating sterilisation equipment such as autoclaves
* Packaging and storing sterile instruments correctly
* Following strict infection control guidelines and protocols
* Maintaining sterilisation records and logs
* Preparing treatment rooms and instrument trays for procedures
* Checking instruments for damage or wear
* Managing stock and ordering sterilisation supplies
* Assisting the dental team when needed

A steri nurse helps prevent cross-contamination and the spread of infection within the practice. Their work is essential for keeping both patients and staff safe.

F U N F A C T: ☢️
For most people, a routine dental X-ray exposes you to very little radiation, often less than or similar to the amount you receive during an aeroplane flight from natural background radiation at high altitude.

Here are some rough comparisons:

* Single dental X-ray (bitewing): about 0.005 mSv
* Panoramic dental X-ray: about 0.01–0.03 mSv
* Flight from Brisbane to Sydney: about 0.01 mSv
* Long international flight (Australia to Europe/USA): about 0.03–0.08 mSv

So:

* A few dental X-rays may equal the radiation from a short flight.
* A panoramic X-ray may be similar to a longer flight.
* Modern digital dental X-rays use much lower doses than older systems.

Dental X-rays are only taken when needed and are important for detecting problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as decay between teeth, infections, bone loss, or impacted teeth.

Nail biting (clinically called onychophagia) can do more harm to your teeth than most people realize. Here’s why:

1. Chips, cracks, and enamel wear 🦷
Fingernails are tough. Repeated biting puts pressure on the edges of your front teeth, which can lead to small chips, cracks, and gradual wearing down of the enamel. This can also increase tooth sensitivity.

2. Teeth shifting and bite changes 😬
The constant force from nail biting can slowly move teeth out of position, especially the front teeth. Over time, this may cause minor crowding or affect your bite (how your teeth come together).

3. Higher risk of gum problems🫀
Your nails can carry bacteria and dirt. Biting them introduces these into your mouth, which may irritate the gums and contribute to conditions like gingivitis.

4. Jaw strain and discomfort🫦
The repetitive motion of nail biting can strain the jaw muscles and joints, sometimes contributing to symptoms linked with temporomandibular joint disorder, such as jaw pain or clicking.

5. Damage to dental work⚒️
If you have fillings, crowns, or braces, nail biting can weaken or break them and may interfere with orthodontic treatment.

Simple tips to help stop the habit:

* Keep nails trimmed short
* Use a bitter-tasting nail treatment
* Manage stress or boredom triggers
* Substitute with a safer habit like sugar-free gum
