SOLUTIONS FOR MOUTH BREATHING

Many are asking what are the solutions to correct mouth breathing. Well, it’s not that simple, because mouth breathing is often not just a bad habit.

It may be the end result of multiple factors involving the airway, breathing, tongue, oral function, craniofacial development and sleep.

And that means the solution shouldn’t simply be:

❌ “Tape the mouth.”
❌ “Do some breathing exercises.”
❌ “They’ll grow out of it.”

The better approach is:

FIND THE WHY.

Then address what is actually driving the mouth breathing — which may require collaboration between dentists, ENTs, GPs, osteopaths, chiropractors, myofunctional therapists and other appropriate health professionals.

The ultimate goal?

✨ Comfortable nasal breathing
✨ Lips resting together naturally
✨ Healthy tongue posture
✨ Better oral function
✨ Better sleep
✨ Healthy growth and development

Don’t just close the mouth.
Find out WHY it keeps opening.

Because when we understand the reason, we can start working toward the right solution.

FUNCTIONS FIRST. BREATHE BETTER. LIVE BETTER.

WHAT IS YOUR BREATHING DEFAULT?

🚨 The mouth should not be the default airway.

Mouth breathing is often dismissed as a habit.

But what if it’s actually a clue?

A clue that something is preventing the body from doing what it was designed to do:

👃 BREATHE THROUGH THE NOSE.

When mouth breathing becomes chronic—especially during growth—it may be associated with changes in:

🦷 Jaw and dental development
👅 Tongue posture and oral function
😴 Sleep quality and snoring
💧 Dry mouth and oral health
🧠 Daytime attention, energy and behaviour

And here’s the important part:

❌ Simply telling a child to “close your mouth” doesn’t address why their mouth is open.

We need to ask better questions:

WHY are they mouth breathing?
Is the nose obstructed?
Are there retained primitive reflexes?
Is the nervous system dysregulated?
Is the diet pro-inflammatory?
Are the tonsils or adenoids contributing?
Is there inadequate tongue space?
Is oral function compromised?
Has altered breathing become an established pattern?

Because the goal isn’t just closed lips.

The goal is to understand the REASON behind the breathing pattern and support healthy function and development.

👃 Better breathing.
😴 Better sleep.
🌱 Better opportunity for healthy growth.

The mouth never works alone.
