Plaque buildup — something everyone deals with, but not everyone fully understands.

Plaque is a completely natural part of having a mouth full of bacteria — and it starts forming on your teeth within hours of brushing. In its early stages, plaque is soft and removable with good brushing and flossing. It's colourless, which makes it easy to miss — and easy to underestimate.

But here's where it gets complicated. Plaque that isn't fully removed hardens into tartar within as little as 24 to 72 hours — and once that happens, no amount of brushing will shift it. Tartar can only be removed professionally, and left to accumulate it creates the perfect environment for gum disease and decay to take hold beneath the gumline where you can't see or feel it happening.

The most effective way to stay on top of plaque is consistent brushing, daily flossing, and regular professional cleans — not just when something feels wrong. Not sure if your routine is doing enough? Mention it at your next visit and we'll take a look. 💙

Putting off the dentist because of nerves and telling yourself you'll deal with it later? You're not alone — but avoidance usually makes the anxiety worse, not better. 🤔

It's one of the most common cycles we see. The longer the gap between visits, the more the anxiety builds — and the more the anxiety builds, the longer the gap becomes. Meanwhile, small issues that could have been treated simply and quickly are quietly progressing into something that requires more involved treatment — which then feeds the fear even further.

The important thing to know is that modern dentistry has come a long way, and there are genuine options available to make your visit as calm and comfortable as possible. All you need to do is tell us how you're feeling before you come in — and we'll take it from there at whatever pace works for you.

You don't have to be brave to walk through the door. You just have to take the first step, and we'll handle everything else. 💙

"So what happens once I finish?" — the part people don't always ask about. 🦷

At the end of treatment you're looking at teeth that sit where they were planned to sit — straighter, better aligned, and a bite that works properly rather than just looking better in photos. Dr Theo shows you the projected end result before you start, so there are no surprises at the finish line.

And yes — retainers, for good. Teeth have memory and they will drift back if nothing holds them. It's not a burden though: most patients wear theirs overnight only. A few hours of sleep to protect 12 months of work is a fair trade.

Straight teeth aren't the finish line. Keeping them is.

Most people know calcium is good for their teeth — but do you actually know which foods make the biggest difference? 🤔

The truth is, what you eat directly affects how strong and resilient your teeth are — and it's not just about dairy. Calcium is the primary mineral that makes up your tooth enamel and jawbone, meaning a diet consistently low in calcium can lead to weaker teeth that are more vulnerable to decay, fractures, and bone loss over time.

Great sources of calcium go beyond just milk and cheese. Leafy greens like kale and bok choy, almonds, sardines, tofu, and fortified plant-based milks are all excellent options — particularly for those who are lactose intolerant or prefer a plant-based diet. Pairing calcium-rich foods with vitamin D is also key, as vitamin D is what allows your body to actually absorb the calcium you consume.

Not sure if your diet is giving your teeth what they need? Mention it at your next visit and we'll help point you in the right direction. 💙

Wondering whether it's time to switch to an electric toothbrush — or convinced your manual is doing just fine? You're not alone — but the answer might surprise you. 🤔

It's one of the most common questions we get asked in the clinic. And while a manual toothbrush used with the right technique can absolutely do a good job, the evidence consistently shows that electric toothbrushes remove significantly more plaque, reduce gum inflammation more effectively, and are particularly beneficial for people who tend to brush too hard, too fast, or struggle to reach certain areas consistently.

The important thing to know is that the best toothbrush is ultimately the one you'll use correctly and consistently — but if you've been on the fence about making the switch, there are very real benefits to upgrading that go beyond just convenience.

If you're unsure which option is right for your specific needs, don't guess. Let us know at your next visit and we'll give you a personalised recommendation based on what we actually see in your mouth. 💙

Most people have been brushing their teeth their entire lives — but are you actually doing it the right way? 🤔

The truth is, brushing technique matters far more than most people realise. Brushing too hard can wear away enamel and cause gum recession over time. Brushing too quickly means you're missing entire surfaces. And brushing in the wrong direction can push bacteria into the gumline rather than removing it — leading to decay and gum disease in the very areas you thought you were cleaning.

Two minutes, twice a day, with the right technique makes a significant difference to your long-term oral health — and it costs nothing to get it right. Small adjustments to the way you brush can reduce your risk of decay, protect your gums, and keep your smile healthier between visits.

Not sure if your technique is up to scratch? Mention it at your next visit and we'll show you exactly what to do. 💙

"The two things people get wrong with clear aligners." 🦷

Mistake #1: not wearing them enough. Aligners need 22 hours a day to work — that's everything except eating, drinking anything that isn't water, and brushing. Skip a few hours here and there and your teeth don't track, the fit goes off, and your treatment stretches out for months longer than it needed to.

Mistake #2: letting oral hygiene slide. Aligners sit tight against your teeth, so anything left on them stays trapped there. Brush and floss before every insert, and rinse your trays daily — otherwise you're finishing treatment with straight teeth and new decay.

Dr Theo talks both through at your consult so you know exactly what you're signing up for.

Noticed white spots on your teeth and not sure what they mean? Your enamel might be trying to tell you something. 🤔

White spots are one of those things that are easy to dismiss as purely cosmetic — but they're often a sign that something more is going on beneath the surface. They can indicate early stage decay where minerals have been lost from the enamel, fluorosis from fluoride exposure during tooth development, enamel hypoplasia, or demineralisation caused by acid erosion or poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment.

The important thing to know is that white spots don't always stay white. Left unaddressed, areas of demineralisation can progress into cavities — and what could have been managed with a simple remineralisation treatment or cosmetic solution becomes a more involved restoration down the track.

If you've been noticing white spots on your teeth or your child's teeth, it's worth getting them properly assessed sooner rather than later. Let us know and we'll get to the bottom of what's causing them. 💙

Finished your braces and quietly stopped wearing your retainer? You're not alone — but your teeth may already be shifting back. 🤔

It's one of the most common things we see after orthodontic treatment is complete. Life gets busy, the retainer feels unnecessary, and before long it's been weeks or months since it was last worn. But teeth don't stay in their new position on their own — the ligaments that hold them in place have a memory, and without a retainer to keep things stable, movement can begin almost immediately after treatment ends.

The important thing to know is that the longer you leave it, the more your teeth can shift — and in some cases, retreatment may be needed to get things back to where they were. Wearing your retainer as directed is the simplest and most effective way to protect the investment you've already made in your smile.

If your retainer no longer fits or you're concerned about movement, don't put it off. Let us know and we'll assess what's happened and work out the best path forward. 💙

"How long will it actually take?" — the #1 question we get about clear aligners. 🦷

Short answer: most people are looking at 6–18 months, depending on how much movement your teeth need. Minor crowding or a bit of relapse after old braces? Often closer to 6. More complex bite changes? Longer.

Dr Theo maps it out for you at your first consult, so you know the timeline before you commit.
