Demineralization, or the "brown stain" phenomenon is a clinical sign that early tooth decay has progressed. As minerals are lost, teeth initially develop white, chalky spots. If these areas are not remineralized, they can absorb pigments from food, drinks, or bacteria, turning yellow and eventually brown, indicating that the enamel is actively breaking down. This means you need to have the tooth looked at by your dentist and importantly improve your hygiene.

The pressure sensitivity window is the 24 to 48 hours following a braces adjustment or orthodontic realignment when teeth are most tender. This delayed aching is normal and indicates that the controlled pressure is successfully triggering the mild inflammation needed to shift your teeth. The ache typically peaks within the first day and subsides steadily over 3 to 5 days. The process can be managed with simple home remedies

Are you about to choose your ATAR subjects and thinking about a career in dentistry? Here's where to start with subject selection in Year 11 and 12. Chemistry and Biology are essential, along with strong Maths and English. Human Biology and Physics are great additions too. For example, UWA's dental pathway requires around a 98 ATAR, plus a UCAT test and interview. So it's not just about grades, communication skills and preparation matter just as much. And if the ATAR isn't quite there? Don't stress. Studying Biomedical Science or Health Science first and applying for postgraduate dentistry is a well-worn path that many dentists have taken.

Knowing the right ages to see an orthodontist is essential for ensuring optimal dental health and development. Here are some key milestones:
First Evaluation (Age 7): At this age, the orthodontist can assess the growth patterns of teeth and jaw, identify early issues, and determine if early intervention is necessary.
Early Adolescence (Ages 10-14): This is often the ideal time for starting orthodontic treatment, as most permanent teeth have emerged.
Teen Years (12-18): Whether for cosmetic reasons or to address functional problems, teens are often more aware of their smiles and more motivated to participate in their care.
Young Adults (Ages 18-25): This is a great time for those who didn’t have the opportunity to get braces as a child but wish to improve their smiles.
Adults (Any Age): Orthodontic treatment is no longer just for kids and teens! Many adults are seeking to enhance their smiles. Innovative treatment options make it easier than ever to achieve a healthy smile.

"Trust the process" in orthodontics means remaining patient and consistent, as teeth move slowly (approx. 1 mm/month). Teeth may temporarily appear more crooked or develop gaps, and bite adjustments can feel uncomfortable. Consistently wearing elastics and maintaining hygiene is crucial for final results.
