Michael Woods

received his formal orthodontic education in Australia and the United States. He has Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Melbourne. He also has a Diploma in Orthodontics from The Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Certificate of Specialty from the University of Oklahoma and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He has been elected to full membership in the prestigious Edward H Angle Society and to Fellowship in the International College of Dentists. He has received the Australian Society of Orthodontists' Distinguished Service Award (2008) and the A*O's PR Begg Research Award (2014). Michael has combined an academic career with specialist private practice. For 15 years, he held the Chair in Orthodontics at the University of Melbourne and, for 23 years, has been the Consultant Orthodontist to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is involved in a wide range of academic, research and clinical pursuits. He has presented more than 100 lectures world-wide and has made more than a 100 contributions to the clinical and scientific literature. He has especially introduced new concepts in late mixed-dentition treatment, orthognathic surgery and the clinical implications of different underlying vertical facial patterns. He has practised specialist orthodontics for children and adults in Malvern/Armadale for 25 years continuously.

Our practice has now settled into the New Year.... We welcome new office staff, Alana and Natalia, as well as Anjany in the clinic. I am very happy with them all so far. They have been a great help to me and Nadeeka, our Oral Health Therapist. Please just ask any of us - if you have any questions at all! MW

2023 was a busy year for me presenting our work locally in the hospital teaching environment .... and also in Sydney and Perth. Our historical experiences in managing complex cases involving orthodontics and jaw surgery - with international publications from the late 80s onwards and hundreds of treated cases - has always drawn interest. I was asked to present this historical overview as an introduction to two days of detailed cutting-edge presentations from Australia and abroad.
2024 looks like a similar year of presentation and argument!

Good afternoon everyone!
We have seen all our patients today as normal.
Unfortunately, the phone hasn't been answered as regularly as usual. Two of our clinical staff are off doing exams for the next couple of weeks and Alana, our main receptionist, was injured at a water-park yesterday.
We will be seeing all our booked patients. If there are emergencies, please SMS me on my mobile phone.
I hope that this will all be resolved by Thursday/Friday.

I have been spending this week in Florida at the EH Angle Society of Orthodontists' meeting... our first face-to face meeting since 2019. It's always good to catch up with friends, colleagues and old mentors from the US and around the World.... really honest, contemporary research and clinical presentations and then enthusiastic argument.
These are some of the great leaders in our profession - and we will continue to search for what actually can be achieved with manipulation of the teeth, bones and muscles ......and then maintained in the long-term.
