🦷🦷Dental practice manager voices concerns🦷🦷

An Albany dental practice manager has warned of adverse health impacts if the planned expansion of local public dental services continues to go unfunded.

Public dental care patients in Albany are waiting an average of 2.5 years for their first course of care, according to a 2023 Senate Select Committee inquiry on the provision of and access to dental services in Australia.

Former WA Premier Mark McGowan promised to fix the problem in the 2022 election, committing to double the capacity of the Albany General Dental Practice, but four years on and the proposed expansion is yet to eventuate.

Instead, the $13 million commitment has routinely been pushed into forward estimates and was later revised to $10.49 million in the 2022 with just $395,000 spent so far.

Pioneer Health Dental’s Michael Jeffery told the ABC extended wait times can increase the risk of blood diseases, heart issues and dementia.

Speaking to Peter Barr on WA Regional Mornings last month, Premier Roger Cook said the project may have to go back to square one.

“For a range of reasons, we have met some roadblocks at different stages. I acknowledge and feel the frustrations”

“Maybe we need to start again and work out what to do.”

A State Government spokesperson said the project is being moved forward, though site constraints has meant the initial plan had to be changed.

Dr Rebecca Zand-Vakily will be taking some well-deserved leave over the next couple of months.

During this time, our Saturday emergency appointments will be temporarily unavailable, as Rebecca is our regular Saturday clinician.

Our team will continue to be available Monday–Friday to assist with any dental concerns, and we encourage patients experiencing any issues to contact us during the week so we can help arrange care as soon as possible.
