Interesting case:
78 y/o man went to his local GP c/o inability to close mouth, difficultly speaking, eating and drinking.
After examination and investigation be the GP he was informed he had a CVA (stroke)
Eventually 4 MONTHS LATER went to a dentist with jaw and tooth pain.
Dentist sent him for an OPG and referred to me for opinion and management of TMD.
After taking a history and clinical exam it was clear he had bilateral TMJ dislocations.

Attempted closed reduction under GA. Unsuccessful.

Back to theatre 1 week later for open reduction and R temporo-malar osteotomy. Successful.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop in the mouth and appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Generally, wisdom teeth do not need to be extracted if they are functional, painless, cavity-free, disease-free and in a hygienic environment with healthy gum tissue.

However, if you or someone you know are experiencing infection, pain or damage to nearby teeth, they should be surgically removed as soon as possible by an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a small joint located in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. The TMJ is the most constantly used joint in the entire body as it permits the lower jaw to move and function.

TMJ disorders are not uncommon. Individuals with a TMJ disorder may experience a variety of symptoms, such as earaches, headaches or a limited ability to open their mouth. When symptoms of TMJ trouble appear, consult an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

RACDS is thrilled to present our next complimentary session, 'Facial trauma for the dental practitioner', in which Dr Nathan Vujcich covers Maxillofacial trauma and its relevance to dental practice. This session will help dentists appreciate the most common facial fractures and treatment options, guidance on when to suspect undiagnosed facial trauma in those attending clinic for dental needs, and understand how this may influence dental treatment you may perform around or after the trauma.

All RACDS members can access the CPD series on our eLearning Portal under 'My Courses': www.racds.org/elearning. Join us today to enjoy this complimentary member benefit and more: www.racds.org/affiliatejoin
