Ingle Farm Dental

Ingle Farm Dental From the start in 1969, Ingle Farm Dental has kept up-to-date with changes in dentistry: in equipment, materials, techniques and infection control.

This is a tradition Dr Johnston and his team are proudly continuing. 1969 was a momentous year for Practice Founder, Dr Karl Skopal, as he describes here:

“I had just left a dental practice at Woomera after 6 years and set up a new practice in my first house in Para Hills. "Newlywed, our son was born later that year at about the same time that Ingle Farm Kmart (the first Kmart in South Australia)

was being built in the middle of a large sheep paddock.

“I was fortunate enough to gain a tenancy within the shopping mall and watched as the foundations were laid and the Ingle Farm Shopping Centre took shape. Built by the legendary entrepreneur of shopping centres, Mr Jack Weinert, he extended it twice over the years until he finally sold it. "The new owners added more shops around the Food Mart. All the suburbs around expanded with new housing in Ingle Farm, Para Hills, Valley View, Para Vista and Walkley Heights and as the suburbs expanded, so did the practice.

“Eventually, the original surgery premises that had served us so well for 37 years became far too small to cope with increasing demand. "In 2006, we took the opportunity to relocate to new premises, with modern equipment, and a more efficient layout in a prime position at the Northern entrance to the shopping centre. "The spacious surroundings made it a pleasure to come to work.”

After working in the practice for 16 years, Dr. Skopal’s daughter Dr. Angela Schuurmans became a partner in July 2010. When Dr. Skopal retired, Dr Schuurmans took over as Practice Principal.

Happy Dental Health Week! 🦷

✨ Let's talk about the mysterious "third molars"—wisdom teeth! 🧠🦷

Did you know these "wise" teeth are the last to arrive, usually appearing between ages 18 and 25? Historically, they helped our ancestors chew tough, raw plants. Today, because our modern diets are softer, our jaws often don't have enough room for them!
Here are a few quick facts about these back teeth:
🔹 Not everyone gets them: Up to 35% of people are born missing at least one wisdom tooth.
🔹 They often get stuck: Because of small jaws, about 70% of people develop at least one "impacted" wisdom tooth that can't break through the gums properly.
🔹 Early checks are key: Catching them early (between 15 and 25 years old) means an easier time evaluating them if they ever start crowding or causing pain

It’s Dental Health Week! 💙

Did you know that many popular sports drinks contain as much as 6 to 13 teaspoons of sugar in a single bottle?
Even worse, they are highly acidic. When you drink them, that acid softens and weakens your tooth enamel. This leaves your teeth completely open to decay and cavities over time.

Your dental action plan:
💧Keep it simple: Plain water is always the best choice for hydration.
⏱️ Wait to brush: Acid softens your enamel, so wait at least 30 minutes to brush after drinking. This allows your saliva to naturally harden your teeth again!
🚰 Rinse: If you do drink a sports drink or soft drink, swish your mouth with plain water right after to neutralize the acid.

Protect your smile and share this tip with your sporty friends! 🚴🏃‍♀️🎾

An update on our wonderful Dr Angela Schuurmans. 💙

Dr Schuurmans is currently taking some extended time away from the practice, making the most of a well earned break. She has already enjoyed a dream trip through the Canadian Rockies, including skating on beautiful outdoor lakes and rinks.

The past couple of months have been focused on rest & recovery, and she is now looking ahead to some special plans - including a relaxing staycation in the Adelaide Hills and an exciting trip to The Kimberley Region in Western Australia.

We're very pleased to share that Dr Schuurmans remains in remission, with her health continuing to be closely monitored.

While this time away has been incredibly meaningful - filled with family moments and long awaited experiences - she truly misses being part of the practice and caring for our amazing patients.

We know many of you will join us in wishing Dr Schuurmans continued health, happiness, and all the very best for the months ahead. We look forward to welcoming her back when the time is right. 💙
