Dental fillings aren’t only used to repair cavities. They can also be employed to fix damage created by tooth grinding, or to repair a broken tooth — provided the damage isn’t too extensive. No matter the reason, when your dentist tells you that you need this procedure, it’s normal to be a little nervous and wonder if it’ll hurt. Here’s what to expect when getting your first filling.

Placing dental fillings

You’re unlikely to feel any pain during the procedure. Here’s how it’ll go.

• You’ll be given a local anesthetic. Your dentist will numb the area around your tooth to be sure that you don’t feel anything during the rest of the procedure.

• The decay will be removed. Once the area is numb, your dentist will use a tiny drill to remove the decayed parts of your tooth.

• The hole will be filled. The cavity will be filled with a composite (tooth-coloured) . Before you leave, your dentist will ensure that you don’t have any issues when you chew, talk or move your jaw.
