A deep bite in a young child is not always considered something that needs orthodontic treatment. In children around 4–6 years old, the conventional approach is often to monitor growth and allow the permanent teeth to begin erupting.

But when we look at these children from a myofunctional and growth perspective, we may see things differently.

Many of the children we see with deep bites also have functional challenges such as mouth breathing or a low and retracted tongue posture.

Why does this matter?

Ideally, with the lips closed and the tongue resting up against the palate, the upper jaw has the right functional environment to develop. When the tongue rests low and the mouth is frequently open, we may instead see a narrower upper jaw and a more downward pattern of facial growth.

In a deep bite, the upper front teeth can also overlap the lower teeth significantly, potentially restricting the lower jaw from expressing its growth freely.

So our goal is not simply to “fix the bite.”

Our goal is to identify and address the underlying functional problems early and create a better environment for the jaws and face to grow.

With our myofunctional and growth-guidance protocols, we often see significant improvement in the deep bite within 6–9 months. The aim is then to support and maintain that improvement as the child transitions into the permanent dentition.

Sometimes early treatment isn’t about moving teeth. It’s about guiding function so growth has a better chance to follow.
