What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

🦷WHAT DOES A DENTIST DO?
Dentists are educated and trained in oral health. Like all other doctors, dentists are extensively trained and require certifications to perform oral health care. Dentists specialize in helping their patients understand and manage their oral health. Licensed dentists diagnose and treat oral health conditions of your teeth, gums, tongue, and mouth. They also perform regular checkups and can clean your teeth, but dental hygienists usually take care of that.

🦷WHAT DOES AN ORTHODONTIST DO?
Orthodontists receive additional education and training to practice orthopedic services and procedures. During their residency program, orthodontists receive in depth instruction to learn proper, safe tooth movement (orthodontics) and the guidance of dental, jaw and facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).

Orthodontists diagnose and treat dental and facial irregularities. Not only do orthodontists treat existing problems, they can also identify problems as they are developing to take action to resolve the problems before they fully develop. Orthodontists treat patients of all ages, they regularly treat children, adolescents and adults.

What is a child's overbite and what can be done about it?

🦷WHAT IS AN OVERBITE?
An overbite refers to upper teeth overlapping the lower teeth. A slight overbite is normal and expected in a healthy mouth.

🦷CAUSES AND HOW TO CORRECT AN OVERBITE
-Genetics
-Facial development
-Teeth grinding
-Myofunctional habits such as keeping hands under the chin when working on the desk, nail biting, thumb sucking, pacifier use, overuse of sippy cups and bottles etc)

🦷WILL AN OVERBITE CORRECT ITSELF?
You may see your child’s overbite and wonder, “Will this correct itself?” This is a great question. Sometimes, there is an overbite during the toddler years simply because their mouth and jaw are still developing. Your dentist may recommend waiting a few more years to see how their overbite progresses, depending on the severity.

🦷WHEN SHOULD AN OVERBITE BE CORRECTED?

Today we're preparing ourselves for our little one's first dental appointment 🦷🧒

🦷Find an Amazing Dentist and Schedule Tour
The first step is finding a dentist for your child. Pediatric Dentists specialize in working with children and managing their behaviors from infancy to adolescence. They are also trained to work with children who have special needs and/or sensory challenges. However, most dentists are experienced in treating children.

🦷Set Clear Expectations
Just like for an adult, kids may get anxious about visiting the dentist for the first time. Be honest with them from the start and tell them what they should expect. At their first visit, the dental hygienist and dentist will examine your child’s mouth to make sure everything is growing properly. They will check for dental caries, bite, gums, tongue ties, and any signs of malfunction such as tongue thrusting or bad habits like mouth breathing, thumb sucking etc.

🦷Dental Themed Activities
Research their favorite character and search for something that includes going to the dentist or brushing their teeth. This could be an episode, story, coloring book, or activity sheet. Seeing their favorite character visiting the dentist will help get them to become excited about their first visit.

🦷Validate their Feelings
