A midline diastema is a space or gap between the two upper central incisors (front teeth) in the middle of the dental arch.

Common causes. *Normal developmental stage in children (often closes when permanent canines erupt)
* High or enlarged labial frenum (the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums)
* Missing, undersized, or extra teeth (e.g., mesiodens)
* Tongue thrusting habits
* Periodontal (gum) disease causing tooth migration
* Jaw-tooth size discrepancy
* Genetic factors.

Common Causes

* Lack of space in the dental arch
* Genetic factors
* Retained deciduous (primary) canine teeth

Clinical Features

* Delayed eruption of the canine
* Missing canine in the dental arch beyond the expected eruption age
* Palatal or buccal bulging
* Displacement of adjacent teeth, especially lateral incisors
* Possible root resorption of neighboring teeth.
