Boys will be boys; A brain-dump 🧠

“Boys will be boys”
A phrase first recorded in 1589. Originating from the latin sentence roughly translating to “Children will be children and do childish things”.

The phrase was initially used to describe the naughty and mischievous actions of young boys. Later, the same phrase was sometimes used to laugh off the silly or vulgar demeanor of which men behave when they get together.

It is now being used to shame men for their “toxic masculinity”.

Men are not naturally gentle and well behaved. The idea of wanting men to be harmless baffles me. Why would you want harmless men? Is this world we live in going to treat them fairly? Is this world going to offer them and privileges for being weak? NO, it isn’t! You’re a fool if you think so.

Men should be dangerous. Maybe women too. True virtue and wisdom come from being a dangerous monster, yet having that under control. Having dove into yourself and truly discovered your potential for pure malevolence and then having that potential tamed.

Why would we want harmless men? What happens when things go south? Can we count on those harmless men to rise up to the occasion?

Harmless men get eaten in this world. They get eaten in the job market, in abusive relationships, and even in the slightest debate with a well articulated individual.

“No, not unfortunately! Thankfully! Otherwise there wouldn’t be any greats” … A great colleague of mine said this to me in response to me describing the current market as unfortunately over saturated with mediocre products and services.

This is another example of Pareto’s distribution. Fundamentally, it can be summarized in common applications like a small number of people making the biggest decisions in a business or even nation. Also, we see that most books sold yearly are only written by a handful of authors. Moreover, and dare I say even more clearly, 1% of the world’s population owns 99% of its wealth.

This law has both a malevolent and benevolent nature to it.

It works FOR us such as in the example of authors. Having the best authors selling most of the books means they make more money. So that, in turn, means they can write more influential masterpieces for us! Rewarding competence is invariably a good idea.

But then comes the last example. Wealth distribution. Even reminds me of when former US president Donald Trump sent US citizens in need that stimulus package during the 2019 Pandemic. Where do you think those stimulus cheques were spent? Don’t you believe anyone who told you they were put in savings or invested strategically. They were used in purchases from Amazon, Walmart and Target. Putting all that money into the pocket of the 1%. So does the Pareto law here lock us in a cycle we cannot seem to break?

Was Carl Jung wrongfully attacked by Freud for his theory on archetypes? Do we humans inherit part of our mentality generation after generation? Or is it simply making sense of human nature and analyzing it to plot such distributions?

Everything is valuable. Though not everything is of equal value as that would nullify the presumed value of anything.

This is one of the reasons sacrifice has been present since the beginning of time. Whether it be the horrific act of slaughtering a female virgin to please the gods, as was seen by ancient civilizations, or merely putting off an outing to catch up on studies.

Jordan Peterson has said that “a sacrifice is a contract with the future”. This contract isn’t made between yourself and your future self as one might presume. Nor is it made between you and another individual. It is made between you and the “spirit” you believe in. It is sacrificing something of value for something you deem as more valuable.

This reaches down into our core as ancient humans. Even in parts of the world which have morphed into a more atheistic belief, straying away from religion and spirituality, the belief of sacrificing the now with the notion of a guaranteed payback in the future remains.

The real question I as myself is;
Has the concept of sacrifice been introduced by religions and scriptures? Or is part of our human instinct? Or is it both?
