The future of healthcare begins with women and children.

As National Women's Month comes to an end, and as we reflect on Child Health, we are reminded that the health of women and children is deeply connected to the health of families, communities and the nation.

There is much to be concerned about in South Africa's healthcare system — but there is also progress worth recognising.

Our latest health data show improvements in maternal and child health. Behind every statistic is a person: a mother who made it home safely, a child who was protected from preventable illness, a family spared loss.

And that is why prevention matters.

Vaccination.
Screening.
Nutrition.
Maternal care.
Health education.
Early intervention.

These may seem like simple interventions, but they can change the course of a life.

At SAMDP, we believe the future of healthcare must be about more than treating illness. It must be about prevention, empowerment, safety, access and care that puts people first.

Theme: "Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All"
Substance abuse is affecting every corner of South Africa.

From alcohol abuse to other drug misuse, addiction is destroying lives, breaking families and robbing young people of their future.

What New Research Is Telling Us

A 2026 University of Cape Town-led study involving more than 4,300 adolescent girls and young women found:

• Nearly 1 in 3 consume alcohol.
• More than half of drinkers engage in hazardous drinking.
• Almost a quarter report binge drinking.
• Harmful alcohol use is more common among young women who are no longer attending school.

Alcohol is also linked to increased risks of HIV infection, gender-based violence, mental health challenges and unintended pregnancies.

These findings remind us that alcohol is not a harmless social activity—it is a major public health concern.
