If you notice some gum bleeding immediately following a dental appointment? This can be normal. If you notice consistent bleeding with brushing and/or flossing at home? This is something you should consult your dental provider about, as it is a MYTH- they will not stop bleeding on their own.

Bleeding occurs when there is inflammation present, and gum inflammation is often an indicator of underlying issues like gum disease.

Do you have other signs, like gum recession or persistent bad breath? If so, it’s a good time to call your dentist, or us! Our team stays up to date on the most advanced ways to treat issues like gum disease, and will know exactly the solution your smile needs.

POV: you just scheduled a deep cleaning and have some internal anxiety because what the heck is the difference??

First of all, you have nothing to fear! In fact, the end result is truly one to look forward to.

In a routine cleaning, the goal is to remove tartar and plaque from the surface of your tooth, while a deep cleaning (otherwise known as scaling and root planing) removes it from underneath your gum line as prevention of & treatment for gum disease.

We may need to split the deep cleaning into two appointments in some circumstances, but not to worry- local anesthetic is typically used to numb the area.

What end result can you look forward to? Many patients report fresher breath, smoother feeling teeth, and healthier looking gums. 🙌

National Stress Awareness Day is the perfect moment to pause and check in with how stress may be impacting your daily life, and your oral health.

Stress doesn’t just stop at that gut feeling, those racing thoughts- it spills over into almost every area of your body, including your mouth. From inflammation, lowering your immune system, dry mouth leading to decay and gum disease, teeth grinding and jaw clenching, the list truly goes on and on.

When you choose healthy coping mechanisms, you aren’t just choosing a better day, but a better outcome for your long term health. Did you know that even looking at a photo of nature can help lower stress levels? Touch grass, talk to a friend, journal, walk a pet. Stress can be managed, it’s just about finding what works for you. ❤️

Two things that remain just as (if not more) important during the winter months: drinking plenty of water, and getting enough vitamin D.

Why water? Exposure to cold weather can actually increase dry mouth, which is something that can also increase bacterial growth, inflammation, and decrease your immune system. This negatively impacts your gum health while also making you more susceptible to seasonal illnesses like the cold and flu.

Why vitamin D? While vitamin D is one of the most common deficiencies year round, it becomes even more prevalent during winter months as we spend more time indoors. Vitamin D is much more than mood and energy boost, as it also prevents tooth decay, gum disease, enamel defects, and issues with jawbone density.

So, grab that glass of water and vitamin D supplement (as long as approved by your physician) and feel like your best self this winter! ❄️
