Jenny Siebert Davis and I serviced a clock you don’t see everyday. The movement in the clock was an everyday German movement, but the case was very unusual. The woman’s parents bought the case, according to the sales slip, at a jewelry store in Taipei, Tiwain. The receipt said “Made in Tiwan Republin of China—1977”. The card is 3 pieces that bolt together, which makes it easier to ship.

I’ve been in the clock business for 51 years and I’ve learned to never say “I’ve seen it all. Today I worked on a 1918 Herschede clock with my wife, Jenny Siebert-Davis, that someone cut off both sides of the pendulum to keep the pendulum from hitting the sides of the case. Not quite the way I would attack that particular problem.

A two year project. A 1900 German made hall clock. As a comparison my 6 feet 2 inches grandson is standing next to the final clock. The original owner sent the clock out in 1970 and had it painted to match her French Provençal furniture. She also had the top left of the clock cut off to fit under her stair case. Now that her granddaughter owns the clock, all the white paint was removed and the original mahogany. With my son and grandson, it took 3 generations of Davis’ to get the clock back and set up. Info on the clock: height just under 9’, solid mahogany, 9 tubes, 2 chimes (identified on the dial as Westminster and 8 tube chime) weights about 300 pounds when full assembled, movement was made in 1900 in Germany, not sure where case was made but it says Royal Furniture, Grand Rapids on the dial.

I may have posted this a couple of years ago. We serviced this clock in Marrietta, OH this morning. It’s a beautiful clock in a Victorian mansion. However, a previous repair person did not make a new pendulum suspension spring, but used a common shorter spring, which meant bending the crutch as in the picture. It’s keeping good time, so why change it. Maybe someday during a complete restoration.

When you change your furniture to French provincial and you own a 10 feet tall 9 tubular bell mahogany clock, if you can afford it, you send it out to get it painted. Now 50 years later the granddaughter wants it restored to original. It also did not fit under the stairway curve to a landing, so why not have your carpenter just cut off the corner before having it painted. I’m still several months away from being done with the restoration, but it will be beautiful.

I have 2 cautions for people buying clocks from eBay and using pack and ship companies. This clock was advertised on eBay as a Tiffany Clock in working order. The clock weighs just about 40 pounds. It’s actually a French clock with Tiffany etched on the dial, probably about 1900. It has so much old thick oil in it and is so dirty there is no way it was running. My customer purchased the clock and the eBay seller took it to a pack and ship company insuring it for $1000. The clock arrived broken into just over 75 pieces with movement damage not to mention the damage to the platform escapement. There is enough splittering of the marble it can never be restored to original condition. Even if I attempted it, the cost of the damage would be 4 to 5 times the insured amount.
My cautions: 1 - be careful buying an item you can not personally inspect first and 2 - never use a pack and ship shop on something you can not replace.

First wheel installed between the plates to test. Notice how the wheel stops with the click at the bottom. Very little friction.

Main wheel bearing on a 30 year old Urgos movement. I have found that standard brass bushing only last about 10 years. I’ve been installing ball bearing bushings that will last decades.

I had a call today to set up a clock in my area for a new customer that had just moved from New Jersey. I was glad to hear he had a new movement installed before his move. Then I got there.
