Baby teeth aren’t “just baby teeth.” 🦷👶 They may not be permanent, but they’re doing some very important work while they’re here.

🍏 They help kids eat & get proper nutrition

Healthy teeth help children chew a wide variety of foods. Cavities or tooth pain can make eating uncomfortable and cause kids to avoid certain foods.

🦷 They save space for adult teeth

Baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth. Losing one too early because of decay or infection can allow neighboring teeth to shift into that space, increasing the risk of crowding and orthodontic problems.

🦴 They support healthy jaw development

Teeth and normal chewing play an important role in the development of the jaws and surrounding facial structures.

🧭 They help guide permanent teeth

Baby teeth essentially act as “pathfinders,” helping permanent teeth erupt into their proper positions.

⚠️ Yes, baby teeth can get cavities and those cavities matter.

Untreated decay can cause pain and infection. In some cases, infection in a baby tooth can even affect the developing permanent tooth underneath it.

😴 They affect more than just a smile

Dental pain can interfere with sleep, eating, school, concentration, mood, and a child’s overall quality of life.

So when someone says, “They’re just baby teeth, they’re going to fall out anyway”…

Remember: They have an important job to do before they do. 🦷💙

Taking care of baby teeth is taking care of the permanent smile growing underneath them. 😃

A little reminder for those growing smiles from Dr. James 🪥😁

Brush twice a day for 2 minutes, floss once a day, visit the dentist twice a year. You know the vibes. 🫶

Does this look familiar? If your child has two rows of teeth, you’re likely seeing what we call “shark teeth,” and don't worry, it’s more common than you might think!

This happens when permanent teeth begin to come in before the baby teeth have fallen out, creating that “shark teeth” look 🦈While it may look a little surprising, it’s usually a normal part of growing smiles!

In most cases, the baby teeth will loosen and fall out on their own. If they don't, or if you have any concerns, it’s a good idea to schedule a dental visit to make sure everything is developing as it should.
