Meet Dr. Jay Zvolanek. 🦷➡️🏆

After 40 years of practicing and teaching dentistry, Jay retired in 2017 — finally ready to focus on himself. What followed was a journey no one could have predicted: a routine procedure turned into months in the hospital, sepsis, and multiple amputations.

He lost fingers, toes, and his left leg below the knee. But throughout it all, he didn't lose his spirit or drive!

Since becoming a Hanger patient, Jay's been fishing (and landing 32 # lake trout), playing soccer alumni games at his college, building scale models, and collaborating with our own ICC clinician Tim Russo in combining their shared worlds of prosthodontics and prosthetics. He and his wife Leslie even shared his story at Empowerfest.

His message to fellow amputees?

"You don't know what your limits are until you test them. If someone tells you that you can't do something, look them straight in the eye and say: Watch me."

We're honored to be a part of your story, Jay! 🙌

Ever wish that you could try something new with your device but not sure where to start? The Integrated Care Center makes it easy!

As a community space, we pride ourselves on helping patients connect and push themselves to new levels. Part of this includes bringing patients together for fun events!

Earlier this month, we hosted an upper limb hanging basket event, where patients with upper limb loss or limb difference had the opportunity to learn to use their devices in new ways. In this case, planting their own hanging baskets.

Thank you to everyone who participated and be on the lookout for future events.

After dealing with many years of vascular disease and poor circulation in his legs, Michael Bertucci finally made the decision to amputate his right leg below the knee in October 2025.

Despite a relatively quick physical recovery, Michael has been working hard to navigate the emotional impact of his experience. Alongside his own healing, he devotes much of his time to caring for his wife, who is living with dementia.

“Through all of this, I am in great spirits,” Bertucci shared. “The staff here at the ICC has been wonderful, and I have a great support system in my daughters.”

Michael has been receiving care from Tom O’Doherty at the ICC and is steadily progressing toward his goals. He hopes to soon return to walking his dog and enjoying the hobbies that bring him joy, including flying remote‑control airplanes and helicopters, biking, and swimming.

Thank you for sharing your story, Michael!

When an infection in his toe led to the amputation of his right foot in 2023 Ricardo Soto was initially in denial about becoming an amputee.

"How do you decide for yourself that you need an amputation? Never did I think that I would be an amputee," said Ricardo.

After receiving his initial prosthesis for his right leg, Ricardo struggled a bit with his mobility until he met ICC clinician Tom O'Doherty and started his care with Hanger Clinic.

"With Tom, he immediately stood me up and asked me what was going on. It took maybe 5 seconds to figure out what needed to be done," said Ricardo. "He showed me what was done and the pain was completely gone."

Despite still struggling through the mental fear, Ricardo was able to get his strength back with the support of Tom's team, even kicking around a soccer ball with a Hanger Clinic employee and fellow amputee!

When an infection took place in his left leg in 2025, Ricardo felt more confident than ever in his decision to amputate knowing that Tom and his team were by his side. Today, he is focusing on the little victories and staying positive.

"It makes a difference when you want to move. When you want to go forward with supportive people who are there to hold you up. I was eager to come in for my appointments this time around," said Ricardo.

During an appointment in March of this year, Ricardo was able to stand on two feet and walk for the first time as a double amputee!

We are so proud of all you have accomplished, Ricardo, and we can't wait to see what you do next!

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming physical therapy students from North Central College to the ICC! 🎉
Our integrated care center is built around collaboration — bringing healthcare partners together to drive better patient outcomes. Getting to share that environment with the next generation of healthcare professionals was truly rewarding. We love being a resource for learning and hands-on experience. &p

Last week, the Integrated Care Center hosted an incredible running clinic — and the energy was unforgettable. 👟✨

Over 20 individuals with limb loss or limb difference came together to sharpen their skills or experience a running blade for the very first time.

At Hanger Clinic, our mission is to empower every individual to reach their full potential — and that includes meeting their physical health and activity goals. The ICC was designed with that purpose in mind: a space that mirrors real-life environments so our patients can practice and thrive with their activity devices.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and to the incredible Hanger Clinic staff from the Chicago area who gave their time to volunteer. You make it all possible!

When a life-changing home renovation accident severed all of the major arteries in Petar Petrov’s arm, leading to an amputation, instead of letting it defeat him, he found new strength and purpose. 🦾

Although the entire process was extremely difficult, Petar realized that prior to his amputation, he wasn’t paying enough attention to the small things.

“I wanted to live. I started paying attention to the small things and learned to appreciate them. That helped me keep my mind strong,” said Petar.

Petar started seeing ICC clinician, Tim Russo, in 2021, who he says showed professionalism and genuine human compassion from the start.

“When we first met, he asked me what I wanted to use the prosthesis for. I told him, if possible, I wanted to become a truck driver again,” said Petar. “He already knew what needed to be done and his support and experience played an extremely important role in my adaptation process.”

With the help of his care team and his family support, Petar is back to doing the things he loves, and is enjoying his growing family, welcoming a second child during his recovery. He’s enjoyed returning to his old hobbies, including fishing, off-roading, and being out in nature, and even participated in the ICC center’s first upper-limb cooking class last May.

With a lot of dedication, Petar was able to achieve his huge goal of getting back to work as a truck driver! đźš›

Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us, Petar! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.

After a leg lengthening surgery resulted in serious issues for Keith Philizaire, and he was unable to get a knee replacement, it was decided that an amputation was the best option to get him back to living a full life.

After the amputation in 2013, Keith spent almost nine years struggling to walk before meeting clinician Ryan Caldwell and beginning to receive care at Hanger Clinic. Ryan created a custom socket he designed called the NuFlex SIV socket, which helped Keith immensely.

He is now able to walk again and has gone back to working at the post office! Keith is grateful to have his mobility back as he raises his two daughters.

We can't wait to see all that you accomplish, Keith!

Born with phocomelia — a rare condition that left his right arm partially formed — Jeremiah is an incredible teenager who has navigated life on his own terms. But now, with a driver's license on the horizon and a growing desire for independence, he is ready for more! 🚀

Jeremiah and his Hanger Clinic clinician, Katie Spottiswood, CPO, MSOP, traveled from Indiana to Chicago to collaborate with Integrated Care Center clinician and upper limb specialist Tim Russo. Together, they faced a unique challenge: designing a device that not only gives Jeremiah a fully functioning arm but also protects his heart — since Jeremiah was also born without a sternum bone.

The result? A one-of-a-kind prosthesis, custom-built and collaboratively designed to keep him safe and doing the things he loves.
This is what's possible when clinicians, patients, and innovation come together in one place. We can't wait to see everything you do next, Jeremiah.
