Does teeth whitening actually work? 🦷

Yes - but it depends on why your teeth are dark.

Whitening works well for external stains on the enamel - the kind that build up from coffee, tea, and food. Bleaching lifts those stains out and brightens the smile relatively quickly.

However, as we age, the inside of the tooth - called the dentin - calcifies and becomes more dense. This makes teeth appear darker from the inside, and bleaching alone cannot fix that. In cases like this, ceramic veneers or crowns may be the only way to achieve the color the patient is looking for.

If whitening has not given you the results you expected, there may be a reason - and a better solution.

At Riverview Dental Arts, we do not build smile makeovers on unhealthy teeth. Tooth decay and gum disease have to be addressed first. The cosmetic work comes after the foundation is solid.
