One of the most critical details in a full-arch implant restoration is the tissue-facing contour of the prosthesis. These surfaces should be carefully designed to create a smooth, polished, convex transition against the soft tissue.
Why does this matter so much? 👇
When the intaglio surface of an All-on-X restoration contains deep concavities, sharp transitions, ledges, unnecessary undercuts, or rough areas, those spaces can become extremely difficult for the patient to access and maintain.
A properly designed smooth and convex tissue surface can make a major difference in long-term hygiene and maintenance. A properly designed smooth and convex tissue surface can make a major difference in long-term hygiene and maintenance.
🪥 BETTER ACCESS FOR HYGIENE
Patients need to be able to clean underneath their restoration. Smooth, flowing contours help create surfaces that are easier to access with water flossers, specialty floss, interdental brushes, and other hygiene tools.🦠 FEWER PLAQUE-RETENTIVE AREAS
Every unnecessary depression, corner, ledge, or rough transition can create an area where plaque and food debris may accumulate. The goal should be a prosthesis that does not create unnecessary plaque traps.
🩸 SUPPORTING HEALTHY SOFT TISSUE
The relationship between the prosthesis and tissue must be intentional. Proper contour, adequate cleansability, and a highly polished surface help create an environment that supports ongoing peri-implant maintenance.
✨ THE INTAGLIO MATTERS JUST AS MUCH AS THE SMILE
A beautiful restoration can look incredible from the facial view, but excellent full-arch dentistry requires us to think in 3 dimensions. That’s why prosthetically driven treatment planning is so important.
The goal isn’t simply to deliver teeth.
The goal is to plan a restoration that is functional, cleansable, maintainable, and designed with long-term success in mind.
At ROMANAX, we believe these details should be considered from the treatment-planning stage — not discovered after surgery. 🔥 Planning an upcoming full-arch case?
