If you have a dental implant, it needs the same cleaning attention as the teeth around it.

The implant itself can't get a cavity, which is where the confusion comes from. Titanium doesn't decay. The bone holding it in place is very much alive, though, and bone responds to the same bacteria that causes gum disease around a natural tooth. Around an implant it has its own name, peri implantitis, which just means inflammation in the gum and bone around the implant.

The bone recedes, the implant loosens, and eventually it comes out. That's a hard thing to hear about something you paid for and thought was finished.

So it comes down to the same unglamorous list. Floss around it. Brush it like a tooth. Come in for cleanings so we can measure the gum around it and catch a change while it's still just a change.

An implant you look after can last decades.
