A patient asked us to send her X-rays to another dentist three days after we'd laid out her treatment plan, and we sent them that same afternoon.

She'd sat in the chair, seen her own images on the screen, and heard what we recommended and why. Then she went for a second opinion. Good. That's what a second opinion is for.

We don't make that awkward. No forms designed to slow you down, no phone call asking why. Your records are your records, and a plan you weren't sure about isn't a plan you should have agreed to.

Some of those people come back. Some don't. The ones who come back tend to be the most settled patients we have, because they've heard the same recommendation twice from two people who don't know each other.

Most people have never been shown that a dental bridge needs cleaning underneath it.

Maybe you've tried and couldn't get anything under there. Maybe you assumed the bridge sealed everything off and there was nothing to reach. It doesn't, and there is, and regular floss won't get you there because a bridge is one solid piece with no gap to slide down through.

The tool you want is a floss threader. It's a stiff loop of nylon with a soft length attached. You thread the stiff end through beside the tooth, pull the soft part along underneath the bridge, and it drags the plaque out with it. About thirty seconds. A water flosser does a good job too, and plenty of people find it easier.

This is worth the thirty seconds because the gum and bone under a bridge can still get infected, and the teeth holding the bridge up can still get cavities. When one of those teeth goes, the bridge goes with it.
