In aesthetic dentistry, we spend so much time trying to recreate nature. The translucency of enamel. The way light moves through a tooth. The subtle imperfections, textures, shapes, and proportions that make something feel real. We study nature. We interpret it. And then we try to create something that feels as though it was always there.

A case where we converted composite veneers to porcelain veneers.

She originally had composite veneers done on 20 teeth elsewhwere and wasn’t happy with the esthetics.

Composite can be a great option in the right situation, and I use it myself. But for full smile makeovers, I prefer porcelain. Composite tends to stain and lose its polish more quickly, requires more maintenance over time, and it’s difficult to replicate the same depth, translucency, and natural appearance that we can achieve with porcelain.

A couple of years ago, she had her upper 6 front teeth redone beautifully with porcelain veneers by one of my favorite people and an incredible cosmetic dentist, Dr. Tomasulo.

When she was ready to complete the rest of her smile I added porcelain veneers to the two premolars on each side on her upper and converted the lower teeth to porcelain as well. The final change may be subtle to some, but it makes a big difference in overall harmony. The smile now feels more balanced and follows the natural curvature of the lower lip.

Many patients with complex dental histories have been navigating treatment, uncertainty, and fear for years. What never escapes us is that these cases are deeply emotional. In the end, our work is less about teeth and more about helping someone feel comfortable in their own smile again.

This case is a great example of what we mean by enhancing, not reinventing. She already had beautiful teeth, but a mix of natural teeth, crowns, and implants created a gray, uneven smile with no real harmony.

Born missing her lateral incisors, she had her canines moved and crowned when she was young, followed by implants placed in the canine positions. This presents significant restorative challenges but through creativity and close collaboration with our master ceramist, we designed a combination of porcelain restorations that blend seamlessly together. Natural, balanced, and as our lovely patient put it “teeth that be teething.” 😂

What an incredible championship run. And I got to experience it with my childhood friends. Felt like a kid again. Thank you New York Knicks 🏀 for giving NY and all of us this moment and experience. And thank you Jalen Brunson for the foresight and unselfishness to choose team over self. New York won’t forget it.

The last time the Knicks were in the Finals, dentistry looked very different and so did I.

Film X-rays, paper charts, impression with goop, and metal braces were the norm. Today we can diagnose more accurately, plan more precisely, and make treatment more comfortable than ever with digital imaging, intraoral scanning, 3D technology, Invisalign and advances that would have seemed impossible back then.
