Mental Exercise vs. Physical Exercise: Does Your Dog Need Both?
We all know dogs need exercise—but did you know exercise isn't just about running and playing? 🐾
💪 Physical Exercise.
This gets your dog’s body moving! Walks, running, swimming, playing fetch, and tug-of-war can help support strength, mobility, and overall fitness.
🧠 Mental Exercise.
This gets your dog’s brain working! Sniff walks, puzzle toys, training sessions, hide-and-seek, new environments, and appropriate chews can provide mental stimulation.
🐾 Why both matter:
You can have a dog who gets plenty of physical exercise but still seems restless. That may be because their body is tired, but their brain is still looking for something to do!
Try combining the two:
🚶♀️ Take a walk and let them sniff
🎓 Practice a few training cues
👃 Play a scent-finding game
🧩 Offer a puzzle toy
🦴 Give them a safe, natural chew to enjoy
The goal isn't to keep your dog busy all day. It's about finding a healthy balance of movement, mental stimulation, and plenty of rest.❤️
Does your dog need more physical exercise, mental exercise—or a little bit of both? 👇
