If treatment has been sitting on your list, October is a useful month to look at it, not because of a deadline, but because there is more room to plan.

Your crown doesn't come out of a box, and it isn't made in a single step.
Once your tooth is prepared, the record of it goes to the dental laboratory. Depending on the case, that can involve a digital scan, a design built on screen, a milled or pressed restoration, and then a technician at the bench, finishing the surface and matching it to the color of the teeth beside it. That last part is closer to painting than to manufacturing: enamel isn't one flat shade. Careful shade characterization helps the restoration blend with the surrounding teeth.
Careful communication between the practice and the dental laboratory helps address shade questions and small bite corrections. It is a quiet part of the process that supports a natural-looking result.

Most of us decide something is wrong when it starts to hurt. Gums don't follow that rule. The early stage is usually painless, which makes it easy to overlook.

What it does instead is hint. Gums that bleed a little when you brush or floss. Gums that look red, swollen or puffy. Teeth that suddenly seem longer, because the gum has moved rather than the tooth. A taste or breath that doesn't clear no matter what you do.

These changes do not confirm gum disease on their own, but they are worth checking. Early gum inflammation often responds to a professional cleaning and a change in routine. When more is needed, there are several treatment approaches, and which one fits depends on the stage and on your own situation. If the sounds are the part you dread, here's what they actually are.
The high-pitched hum is an ultrasonic scaler. It uses vibration and a fine stream of water to break up hardened buildup near the gumline. It isn't cutting anything.
The soft whirring toward the end is polishing: a small rubber cup and a gritty paste smoothing the tooth surfaces once the buildup is gone.
The suction removes water, saliva, and debris, which is what keeps things dry and comfortable while the hygienist works.
A routine cleaning doesn't involve a drill. Not one of the three sounds is one.
Knowing what a noise is can take most of the edge off. And if dental anxiety is why it's been a while, tell our team before the appointment, not after. It changes how we pace the visit.

Tell us below: do you floss before you brush, or after?
People defend both orders, sometimes firmly. Here's the part that settles it. Either is fine. Current ADA guidance is that the sequence doesn't matter as long as the flossing itself is thorough and happens daily.
What does matter is whether it happens at all, which is really a question about habit rather than technique. Flossing before you brush works or after. The best order is the one you'll consistently follow.
